Width might be an issue, the cast alloy sump is really wide.

i would talk to someone like Simtek at Rochdale and or some of the guys in VW forums.. I fear an ECM from 2006 VW will not be easy to convert to run the engine as a "stand-alone unit" it will look for many communications from ABS/Gearbox and even a myriad of "body control" functions all of which are transmitted in modernish cars via can-bus.
DONT FORGET it will probably be full to the brim with "Cheat Software" to fudge emissions lol

Thanks.
Thats exactly the info i need.

I fear the ecm will be the most complicated part of the project

personally i am not a big fan of any VW oiler. try this ANV-LR1 | Blacksmithgarage
What do you mdan by oiler? The engine as a whole?

Im not masavly fussed as to what goes into it tbh.

I quits like the td5 thats in it if it wasnt for some steep hills.

The main draw to the vw/audi powerlant is that its there sitting at my dads and free.

Theres also some advantage to it being fhe same engine that is in my dads toureg so spares parts on the shelf.

But the ecu issue might kill the project. Ive contacted a range of ecu buders progrMmers and tuners hopefully some or all of them will provide valuable information.

Cheers.

An oiler is an engine that runs on heavy oil, commonly known as a diesel.

I think cummins do a v8 car crate engine, ie drop it in and ti runs, bet thats cheap!

https://www.cummins.com/engines/repower

If I was going to re-engine a Defender, which I am not, I would go for a 6 cylinder BMW petrol engine.
There would be several advantages to doing this. One being that it is a good engine, another being that it was fitted as a standard option in South Africa, so all the parts should be available, including the electronics, although you might have to buy them abroad.
These vehicles are supposed to be an excellent drive, and at least one has been personally re-imported to the UK.

I can see a problem with that one. Defenders don't float, in fact, they aren't known for being watertight on the ground! :D
Haha mine leaks like a sieve.
But those are way bigger numbers than id be looking for.
But yhanks for the videos
And the journey to find the marine engine ecu.......

Try and find the guy who stuck a vag v6 diesel in his boat, Iirc it has been in there for years, unsure if injector pump or common rail lump!

Edit I lied its the older 2.5 tdi lump, and its been in there for 14 years.
