I did the same too, with the factory fits i noticed a flappy papery sound when putting too much bass on so i stripped it down to find the flexing ring around the speaker cones had completely perished over time and just flapped around in there so i went to buy some 100 watt replacements and was chuffed to see they had the threaded hole there behind a sticker so i didn't have to contemplate making a new bracket for the amp and find somewhere to fit it too.

i don't know why some people feel the need to fill their hatchback boots with massive bass boxes, my sony head unit puts out 4x52 watts and my speakers are all original sizes yet i can only put the bass on halfway otherwise all the interior fitments start to work loose!......who said size is everything :)

Although power is important it's also the frequency reponse, most sub amps go from 30 to 200Hz and sub loudspeakers -30 to 900Hz the standard disco sub amp will never handle that frequency range and as for output power from the amp, I don't think there's that much coming out as the standard loudspeakers which are actually mid range are only rated at 30watt max.

Thats why if you want, like me, 'bass' then it's a bass box in the boot and a powerful 200 watt amp under the passenger seat all the remaining loud speakers handle mid range with tweeters the highs.

And nothing is working loose :)

I'm sure you're right however my point was that even with the set up i have which is simply to upgrade the speakers and head unit there is more than enough bass in the system which is why i need to reduce the bass to half way to stop it overwhelming the music......it's there if i want it though.

I just had another look there, there is no stand by or out put on/off function on the stereo, i even read the whole feckn manual and couldnt spot anything there.
So i'l do as 300stedi suggested and get rid of the long thin connection thing, i presume there is no need for it anymore. in the meantime il keep googling for other possible faults

Cheeers all!

yeah keep trying, remember though if you want to reinstall your factory head unit to sell your disco at any time then keep the plug to connect back to the old head unit.......but if you're not bothered then bin it!

Right, ive done away with the old plug and connected the wires directly, still nothing. I did a simple test that i read many moons ago where you place a battery between the red and black wires to see if any noise comes trough the tailgate speakers. I did hear a slight popping! Nearly there!!!

problem is i cant remember what exactly the test was meant to prove and since im all alone I cant tell if the noise is coming from the rear pillar speakers or tailgate speakers.

is your discovery mk1 or mk 2 ? also what was the plug called i cant find it on ebay ? cheers.

Its a Disco 1 300TDI

The plug http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Landrover-discovery-subwoofer-stereo-lead-NEW-ITEM_W0QQitemZ170292206039QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item170292206039&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318 came from this guy eBay My World - sounds4wheels
who did refund £3 when I told him it didn't fit and what I had to do.

Is it not menu driven rca outputs on the radio, might be just as simple as that.
Also does it say in the manual what the RCA connectors are for on the radio

ok my rear door speakers with the amp thingy def dont work

my head unit is a Kenwood W5541U - Single CD not multichanger

I have 2 rear RCA connectors referred to in the manual as Rear preout/subwoofer pre out

1 connector is white and says left the other is red and says right

do i just connect the red and black wire from the loom to a new single RCA plug and then plug it into either of the head unit preouts or is a more complex solution required ?

Use this Phono 2 Plugs to 1 Socket Cable > Maplin or just one channel as the sub is mono don't forget that u require power to the door amp and power to switch the amp on/off also.

Have I got this right then? Just wanted to make sure I understood - been trying to work this out for a few weeks until I saw this thread.

Got two 6.5 subwoofers from Blue Aran - Professional Sound and Lighting

The ones I got were £8 each, came to about £22 with shipping. And they came next day - they are really heavy but havn't had chance to see how good they are yet or even if they fit!

The speakers you got should work fine but before you start just see if the new speakers have a small threaded hole in the centre of them underneath ( might be under a sticker ) you will need these holes to attach the amp to when fitting them back, other than that it should be an easy swap. one thing to note is that when i installed my new subwoofers i had to put new spade connectors on as the land rover ones don't match up to sony's.

WOOT - I have bass :D

Bought the 2 into 1 RCA connector from Maplin £3.99 (as linked in an earlier post due to setup of my head unit) along with an RCA plug for 99p.

Checked behind the head unit all the wires were connected up in the ISO blocks inc all the wiring for the amp. The only 2 wires not connected were the Red and black.

Removed the block and solderd the red and black wires to the correct bits of the RCA plug then plugged it into the 2 into 1 splitter.

now all I have to do is figure out how to stop my number plate rattling

Ty for an awesome thread

Well done stu2985, forget the number plate and do a drawing in 'paint' and post it so every one knows the connections required.:)

I'M STARTING TO GET THE FEELING THAT i'M THE ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD WHO CAN'T GET HIS SUB TO WORK WITH A REPLACEMENT HEAD UNIT !

And yes, I am shouting because I'm really pîssed off!!!!

I've got two Tdi 300's, both with subs and new head units and I can't get either to work.

I believe I've identified the red and black wires required, I have phono screened cable terminating in phono plugs at one end and chocolate block at the other. Plugged them into the pre-amp outs at the back.

I've tried all permutations that I can think of in terms of connections, tried with ignition on (in case the power to the sub is switched) and off, searched both radio manuals for info - none!, searched menus on both radios for some telltale sign - none.

I just don't get it, on one car, yes maybe there is some fault somewhere else - but on both !!!!!!!

Anybody who can help me get these things working is in for a BIG thank you:mad:

Cheers
Dave

I've only been trying for 12 months, so maybe I haven't served enough time yet?

Cool, thanks. Will check that. Have to put spade connectors on - my speaker wires were soldered onto the original speakers which I thought was a bit ****e. Plus the stock speakers were blown to absolute pieces so they weren't up to much by the look of things!

Now I am a complete nub when it comes to do anything on my Disco however following teh advice from the threads above it worked for me. My stereo ISO connectors already plugged in everything apart from the red and black wire.

My stero had to rca connectors marked as outs so I just bought the 2 into 1 lead that someone else listed earlier (although I may have got away just using one rca connector as its mono someone said)

Anyway I just fastend the red wire to the centre part of the rca socket and the black wire to the outher part of the socket. Maplin do em for 99p that unscrew and are a doddle to solder.

My head unit doesnt have any separate controls in the menu to turn on the amp / out connectors. Soon as i connected it up it worked.

Big lad I am quite happy if you pay my travelling and put me up in france to come over and try it out for you ;)

Hi Stu, that sounds just like the way I linked up both of ours but rien, nada, nothing, nowt, nich - you get the picture.

My head unit does have phono pre-amp outs, but no menu item to turn them on or off, so I assume they are permanently on/available.

Re visit to customer site, by all means, we have 2 Discos and one bed, plus a cellar full of wine and cheese - the choice is yours:drum:

Got mine working....kind of!

Firstly I had to jigsaw and angle grind some of the rear door out to get the massive magnets on the new speakers into the door - little tip, don't buy jigsaw blades from the Range or Wilkinson! (10 blades later...)
They work but they are pretty poxy - think I over egged the pudding on the speakers - they are 8 Ohm and I reckon the stock are probably 4 so the amp doesn't have enough poke to even drive them. Can see and feel them pulse with the music so I know it's wired right. Got an old 250W amp somewhere so might try and put that in but that'll mean upgrading the power, earth and running two full phono leads to the rear. Might be I've done a krap job of the connections but it started raining and it was cold......
But it works a little bit.....thanks everyone for a point in the right direction!

Wire your two 8-ohm loudspeakers in parallel the amp will see a 4-ohm load and as you already have the audio signal in place you will not have to touch that when you upgrade your amp.

I run with a 'sub in a box' in the boot with the amp under the passenger seat and i picked up the signal direct from the door amp, so I just had to run the power supply from the battery, earth was local taken from the seat mounting bolt, I had to pickup the amp switch supply again from the door amp via a DPDT switch so when I remove the sub in the box for some space I can switch back to the door bass speaker.
