hi, the speakers i replaced where just off the shelf vibe FLI 6 1/2 inch. i just drilled and pop riverted them in to the sub pod they fitted really nice and snug. it was just the screw holes didnt line up.

This is how I did mine.
Unit being replaced
Got one of these plugs of E Bay (£16) to make the rear subs work!
Which was wrong :mad2:
Its this plug with just 1 red & 1 black wire coming out of it.
That fits in here.
Like this.
I had to remove the plug from the e bay lead and connect the wires to the cars loom also connect the RCA plug to one of the stereo preouts.
A bit of insulting tape and voilà job done :good:

This had been bugging me for ages and it was one of those jobs I had never got round to because I didn`t know how to do it, Thanks guys stereo sounds much better!
Did this make a massive difference to the sound quality? Do they go louder without distortion?

The wires you can't connect are the black and red one that go into a black plug about an inch and a half long and quarter inch thick right?...if so then these are the wires that normally would be rca cable wires, cut the wires and connect the red one to the inner wire of an rca cable(if you have an old one great if not then buy a cheap one)then connect the black one to the outer rca cable, once done you can just connect the rca cable to back of your new head unit, mine had a "sub out" slot so i used this but any of the others will do(preferably rear though), i had to look this up myself as i did the same job over christmas.....hope you get it sorted or already have, good luck.

I stuck a new kenwood head unit in a few months ago despite playing with the base it always sounded tinny now this may explain why
my 96 300 tdi auto with aircon has a long speaker in the rear door as well as the 2 in the back luggaage compartment - i never thought to check if they still worked. Also I have no idea if I have an amp
soon as I get it back from the garage will pop the radio out to see what harnesses I still have unplugged at the back

the long speaker you have in the rear door is actually two speakers set side by side and they are controlled by an amp which is usually bolted to the back of the speakers, if you have no base then these definately aren't working, the spare wires behind the stereo although red and black(as in live and earth) actually carry the sound waves and not power, if you try to connect a live to the red wire and an earth to the black it will just crackle........good way to know if it works is to play Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" on full bass and if your teeth start to vibrate then you're good to go

mk2 , i had the same head unit as you have, don't waste time buying the specific wire, anywhere like motorworld or halfords will sell cheap rca cables,i had some lying around, just buy this and chop the end off one, just remember to cut the old wires a little way back in case you ever want to stick the old unit back in to sell it.

cheers, ill have a look at mine and see if i can get it sorted. i replaced the rear door speakers for 100watt speakers and they fit perfect even down to the fixing screws, they even had the little threaded hole so i simply unscrewed the amp off the land rover ones and rescrewed it to the new speakers just got to get em workin now

Right, so im given this a go again, Ive followed all the previous simple instructions but taught id ask this before i go chopping any wires.
So ive removed the red and white wires from that yoke from ebay, plugged it into that thin rectangular plug and connected the single black and copper plug (rca?) to iether of the red or white outputs as shown. but still nothing. Should i cut these wires and connect them to two single (a red and white) rca plug?
stereo has normal rca outputs and Im told the amp was working before the stereo was swapped so im guessing it should still work.

sounds like you have done it right but can you be sure the wires inside the black plug are connecting properly? if not then it would be better to do away with the long thin black plug completely and connect the wires direct, connect them using a plastic block connector first to make sure everything works before making it permanent with crimp connectors and preferably heat shrink tubing, as for what you said about splitting them it probably won't make a difference, the two speakers in the back door act as one sub woofer because they are too close to each other to be counted as left and right, i connected mine to just one rca and both speakers work together from that one.
if this still doesn't work then the fault might lay elsewhere.....Good luck

i don't know why some people feel the need to fill their hatchback boots with massive bass boxes, my sony head unit puts out 4x52 watts and my speakers are all original sizes yet i can only put the bass on halfway otherwise all the interior fitments start to work loose!......who said size is everything

cant beat sony ! i was dead chuffed to when i found the lil threaded holes for the amp. its brill when something goes right !!!

certainly is.......only problem is when it goes right then it's done much quicker and that means having to find more money to do more projects to keep idle hands busy

thats could explain some people's possible problems i suppose, as mine had the sub woofer out socket i had no problems, as soon as i coupled it up the bass was there and was very plentiful too.....maybe Fletcher could look into the pre out switch thing as his wiring seemed to be ok.

I said this back on page one "So match up the circuits to the outputs of your head unit and connect. I suspect that you will have to adjust the pre-out level on your head unit to match the door sub amp"
