Do you regret buying a Freelander?

I regret trying to work on it. Something as simple as a starter motor removal is a bitch of a job.

Never let the Germans design anything ever again, and don't let scousers build it! :D
 
Have to be honest and say that I still enjoy driving my Freelander, I know its going to start and stop with no problem and its so much easier to get into than most other cars. Although I only do a small mileage my insurance cost no more than £175 per annum and that's with protected no claims, car hire and legal liabilities. I was looking at buying a newish Focus but don't think I'll bother.
 
We bought our 2001 Td4 as a project, it has more problems than we first thought, but that's not an issue, we love it, drives great and enjoy working on it and searching for parts for it:)

The answer is YES and NO!!!
I"m currently on my third Freelander, a TD4ES 3 door Automatic with 144k on the clock and this one gets my vote NO! because it"s been more trouble than the other two put together.
My first two a 1999 XEDI 3 door manual and then a 2000 TD4S 5 door Auto were both fantastic motors, reliable and comfortable and both of these get my vote for YES.
The only reason I sold my TD4S was because it didn"t have any of the extras that my current TD4ES had, but saying that I wish now that I had kept it. It had lower mileage, under 100k, far superior engine and auto box, immaculate interior and generally a far better looked after car. But then we can all say that, can"t we? But despite all that I will keep this Freelander, I"m now in my 70s, still capable of clambering under or over a car to carry out repairs and as long as the Good people who respond to my cries of help on LANDYZONE still keep on helping me I will keep on Landying.
 
Absolutely love mine-TD4 Kalahari auto, 03 plate. Well better than I dared dream. Had p38 autobiography and 2 classic Rangies before, so I was prepared to be disappointed, but I'm chuffed instead.

Really surprised by my '04 TD4. Love it. Few issues to resolve but it's done almost 150k and at that age I expect some bits to sort.
Having gone from Series IIa to Defender and now back to a series III plus the Freelander, I don't think they're directly comparable. Horses for courses. I have uses for both and they both perform them up to and occasionally beyond expectation.
Very pleased. Much less gay and problematic than the blokes in the pub and forums (including this one) would have you believe.

I have a 2002 Td4 ES , and love it, yes had some issues but once right and maintained properly it is a dream to drive and own, will get another but think i would find it hard to get a suitable replacement that has been well looked after.
 
I bought the missus a 1998 2.0l diesel freelander because I wanted us to be a Landrover family. She didn't like my Disco :(. We kept the Freelander for almost 3 years and never had any problems, apart from when a dick head valeter karchered the engine, and it was driven daily plus quite a few south of France/England trips. The Freelander is gone now, replaced by the Vectra she always wanted but I would have another.....my missus wouldn't.

Had a 1.8 K Series in the 'Naughties' nice drive but a s**t engine totally wrong for the vehicle. (been better off with an old 1.8 A Series!! from a MGB GT! lack of puff but would still keep going?)

Now got a TD4 3 Door, decent lump, like the retro feel, great design (but being British, the engineering sometimes lets them down?) Low 5th Gearing, shouting out for 6th Gear?
But overall good, but it does depend on the particular car, get a bad one and they are aweful, a good one its a gem.
Upside very cheap parts and servicing, stylish mid sized off-roader, down side? crashy ride, body roll, can be noisy, tyre roar? Made in England :)

I had a Hyundai Sante Fe CRDI 52 plate, bigger, tad quicker, smoother, quieter, more refined, more reliable? time will tell, probably - but a tad boring and expensive on parts? schools out at the moment....
But the Freelander has STYLE - love the Land Rover Brand (its British after all) .... the Sante Fe..... ummmmm let see.....

I love my V6, especially now I've got most of the problems sorted.
140k now and going strong :)
For future reference, the biggest problem with the V6 is bad advisers, especially the ones who assume everything is due to HGF.

and those who assume that because it's a petrol version that it will, imminently, explode :eek:




when the truth is that are many thousands of examples of this engine, and it's derivitives, that continue to live trouble free in other cars including Rover, Lotus and MG :)
 
No, I don't regret buying my Freelander.

I wanted one of the last ones made, a TD4 auto HSE, and that is what I have. I was looking for one with less miles, but all the ones I saw were £2-3,000 more than I paid. I have had to spend money on it, but I was expecting too, I mean, it is a 7 year old car with 113,000 miles on it when I bought it.

It is a comfortable long distance cruiser, as my recent 2000 mile trip to the a Highlands confirmed, it isn't quick, it isn't particularly economical, but it is better than the competition that is available at the same age. It also looks good and is well made (in Britain).

In many ways I prefer it to my previous car, a brand new Skoda Yeti, which was lighter, faster, more economical, very capable off road with loads of toys, some of which I miss, (like the swivelling xenon headlights, the built in sat nav & Bluetooth, the height adjustable electric seat, the flappy paddles on the multi function steering wheel), but I have a new Tom Tom device, a DAB radio with BT and I can fit xenons if I so wish (not road legal -yet).


Also, the big one............




It is a Land Rover.


It is pretty good off road.

Very happy with mine too! I did a lot of off roading and wanted another Landrover for daily transport so I got a low mileage 52 plate TD4 ES, it's good on fuel and everything works, it's very comfortable and nippy if you drive it hard. Had to put a clutch in it in December but apart from that and a few bulbs it's been sweet. It'll be going soon because I'll be needing more seats/space & bigger towing capability but I will miss it. Very underrated for on road but I wouldn't think it's much use off it!
 
Baught a 2005 TD4 5 Door for the wife last year. Being automatic, she loves to drive it. I also love the car. She is however at the mechanic now for almost 3 days now, trying to fix a power loss problem that seems to be caused by some electrical fault.

Unable to trace the exact origins thus far. Have checked the full fuel system as well as the turbo self and all checks out. Diagnostics points to a turbo performance issues related to a short somewhere. But the question is where.

Hope this does not break my love for this car.
 
Got a 2002 TD4 commercial just over a year ago, with 183,000 on it. Apart from a clutch and flywheel change last month been absolutely great. Some mild off road with the forestry commission with no problems at all, we'll except for the usual ground clearance niggle. 2 inch lift this month.
Also used for my work. Great little vehicle.
 
Mine is making me pay now!!!! Slowly and surely its making me pay!!!! A little bit here and a little bit there......:violin:
