Going to show my ignorance here - my 2002 TD4 sounds like it is 'pinking' (pre-detonation) when pulling hard up hill. A sort of light 'tinkling' noise.

Do diesels do this or show timing errors in different ways?
If they do - what can be done about it - presume adjustment is out of question with engine management modules?

Thanks......

No
colour of smoke changes if diesel injection timing is out, I'm not an expert on new fangled diesel engines post 1948 though:)

Dunno - but probably. Mine's an auto !
It is like the sound if you did it in a petrol car with the ignition a bit far advanced. TDC and all that ...

I've heard cars doing that (diesels) when they are labouring or setting off from tickover.

Have you recently bought derv ? Could have some water in it if the garage tank was low or some supermarket fuels are poorer quality.
Easiest and cheapest put a few gallons of good quality fuel in like shell V power or BP ultimate.
I'm sure the learned one's will have better advice for you later.

usually fuel related for an d.engine like the td4/m47r ..

or bad spray pattern from an injector ..

I have a sound similar pinking at certain times. It's actually quite common on common rail diesel engines. It'll be an injector not spraying as well as it should or is fuel related. The timing can't be out, but the fuel atomization can be way off if an injector is fouled. Fuel can also be variable in quality if cheap fuel is obtained. Mine doesn't seem to do it if I have Comma Diesel Magic in the tank.

So mentioned the 'pinking' a few weeks back. Tried Comma diesel magic - no change. Then another tankful with added 2 stroke oil (about 2%). No change. Situation is getting worse and is now accompanied by loss of power on hills and black smoke puff when changing down or accelerating under load.

Have today; read loads of threads! checked all turbo hoses and vacuum pipes, tried MAF disconnected and replaced MAF with another known good one and no change. Any more ideas please? Can hear rushing noise when smoke appears (when drivers window is down) (think it is only turbo but could be air leak) where else could the air be getting in?? Could it be pending turbo failure - but is the 'pinking' linked to this - don't think so........

Vehicle is TD4 with 153k on clock and regularly serviced, EGR bypass and BMW breather.

Is it worth changing injectors one at a time?

"Can hear rushing noise" You have an air leak somewhere that you can't see. You might have to take each hose off and have a good look at em

it was the one with the sensor on, on the later td4 but if he is earing a whooshing sound then it could be the air intake hose on the turbo which is at the bottom the later ones had clips on the earlier ones clips were not put on .

"Can hear rushing noise"
fairly sure that everyone who's posted that statement on here
have found the cause to be a turbo hose

i think the last one was after some work was done on the exhaust ..
and the bottom turbo hose .. as teddywood1 has written ..
was found to be loose ..

and i put forward that the 'pinking' ( light diesel knock )
would possibly be related

Thanks for the advice. Carried on looking, took all hoses off, cleaned, refitted. Eventually found hiss noise near EGR blank. Removed and refitted with new seal and all quiet.
Just the pinking to resolve now - still down on power, but better. Sending off spare cleaned up (after looking at advice on this site) set of injectors for testing prior to fitting one at a time to find the duff one I hope.
