Hi I am getting a sloshing sound coming fro the heater. The heater still works. I have tried bleeding it but can't get rid of it. Recent replacement: water pump, radiator and four hoses (to cure overheating) The car runs well is not overheating now. But, after leaving it for over 12 hours the coolant is still under pressure. Prior to the recent repairs my garage carried out a test to see whether there was exhaust gas in the coolant resulting in passing the test.

You say those parts were replaced to fix the overheating, how bad was it? what was the actual cause of the overheating?

Did you follow the instructions in Rave fully, mine took a few goes to bleed fully.

Thanks neily. The car had a head gasket replaced under warranty in May last year. But I have had trouble since. Leaking hose,possible duff thermostat, split hose and pinhole in another hose four hoses replaced, failure of water pump and then radiator blocked. So the cause of the overheating was due to coolant loss. The garage says that oil in the hoses leads to softening (they are probably all as old as the car)

Yes I have studied the recommended method. I have also been parking the car on a slope - bonnet higher and each time I use it I try to bleed some more air out. There is always a little coming out. Since the coolant is still under pressure after leaving the car for 12 hours it does seem as if air or exhaust fumes are entering the coolant system again.
 
HAVE it sniff tested & try changing expansion tank top !
Hi Since the coolant is pressurised even after leaving the car for over 12 hours why would I suspect the expansion tank cap? Are you thinking it might not be opening to let pressure out? Sniff test? Yes the garage did it last time, not so long ago, and I had a bill so I could save myself some money a buy a kit myself
 
Buy a kit & A cap at the same time ! Two tiny valves in cap & with age they don't work !
Second on the cap. Is it using any water still?

If its pressurised that much it should overflow out to the open ended pipe.

I stick a bottle over it with a hole in the cap to check if the pressure is too high and water is escaping through the over pressure vent pipe.

But that will only work if the cap is working correctly.

No its not using any water.
 
Two vents under cap Geoff ! 1 vents out when hot, 1 vents in when cooling down !:)
Maybe on other vehicles... the D2's tank cap has only one pressure release valve which should open at 1.4 bar. The sniff test on diesels can be irrelevant in some cases

The pressure cap is the same as that fitted to a few other Land rover vehicles, it vents at 15 PSI and is designed to fail completely at 22 PSI to prevent system damage. ;)
 
Then it seems that the workshop manual is wrong :confused:

Well possibly, seeing as how it is the same cap fitted to several Land rover models all with the same operational description, but different than that for the TD5. PCD000070 is the part number.
 
For those fitted with PDC000070(Defender/D2 Td5, 4.0 V8, RR P38 2.5 DSE) the description is the same, only about prerssure relief valve at 140KPa(20psi) as stamped on the cap albeit on some sites it's listed as used for L322 too and the description for that it's differento_O
