So while driving today I head a rattle when hitting a bump.

Laid under the car and discovered i can move the brake caliper and recreate the metallic noise. I can do this both sides but one is worse than the other.

Caliper bolts are tight and so are the carrier bolts.

Would I be right in thinking a combination of worn pads and sliders?

Best to strip the brakes down and check everything especially the slide pins.

More than likely, son's Defender had rattling front pads.
Buy some new ones, cheap enough.

Have you checked the condition of the anti rattle springs on the pads ?
Sounds like their damaged / not installed correctly or are missing.

So I have replaced the caliper pins and fresh pads however I still have the rattle. I was out laning yesterday and it was particularly bad over bumper but on a smooth road it's okay.

It happens when my foot is on or off the brake. I have checked for play this morning and I cannot find anything.

Bit stumped at the moment

You sure it's the brakes and not drop links or something.
