What a great thread!

Looking at tray backing my disco thats ready for the scrapyard or a make over but i need to convince my mrs first as she already hates my 90 lol...

Great work and thanks for the ideas!

Haha your welcome, always a battle convincing the boss ;)
Its defo worth doing, only downside is the space.
If i where to do it again, i would wait and not use scafolding as its very heavy.
I saw your pm but replying on the phone is a pain, but it seems you found the thread.
There are a bunch of pics at the start showing what i did if you havent seen them yet.

I read the first 15 pages until my eyes couldn't take anymore and then I skipped through the rest just looking for pics lol. I usually get away with it if she can't see it but at current there's nowhere to hide it lol

Since rolling my Disco I've been thinking of doing something like this. The front is still pretty straight. But the back roof is smashed.

Been thinking of cutting it behind the drivers seat and putting in a plate like yours.

How hard was it too do?

Hey,
Sorry to here about your disco, its not that bad at all.
It can all be welded to make it water tight. The only thing that can't is the outer wings.
I would advise to use a plasma cutter or a reciprocating saw to cut the body.
the skin can be done later.
I would advise to leave as much body as possible as the storage for straps ect is nice... unless your going to make a lockbox in the back.

if you want any advise along the way, feel free to ask.

Started to resume work on these D2 axles, got the rear diff in and axle all bolted together.
Still got to sort the upper and lower arm chassis side mounts for it.

I got a set of wheel adaptors before xmas, they adapt D2 axles to D1/defender wheels.
Apparently they cost the guy like 400 quid (which I paid no where near for!) they are 35mm thick steel and are defo up for the job (forgot to get a pic)
But I fitted them and put the D1 alloys back on.

Standard D1 front axle (78" wide)

D2 axle with adpators and D1 wheels (86" wide)

I think I'm going to need to redo the arches as there is clearly not enough room or coverage!
My plans are to do a tube arch setup.

To be continued.... soonish.... :)

Im currently debating d2 beadlocks or 90 pcd beadlocks and adapters. I dont as a rule like adapters but theres so many more wheels available for 90 pcd beadlocks :(

That was exactly my issue!

To be honest, a set of D2 rims with bead locks will cost around 400 quid (if you weld then on yourself)
.
The adapters are very pricey unless you wait like me to get a set at a decent price.
chances are a set of 90 bead lockers are going to be rusty if cheap or will cost close to new price.

Well that's amazing mark, had no idea it was a thing or there was a market for it

But yeah I guess the popular d2 axle brings its own set of problems

I'd just be so concerned about ever increasing width

Can you not just get a set of d2 low offset steels and weld beadlock rings on?

Or are you looking at proper high end double beadlocks? No Mach 5s for d2 fitment?

You can pick up bog standard steels for D2 at around 100 quid. I'm not quite sure how strong they are and I must admit, i do fancy a but of extra width :D

ideally looking for double beed lock at some point but single will do for now.

Extremeoffsetwheels.co.uk

Got mine off them when it was garageand4x4 back in the day and it was just one guy

Anyway email them and see what they can get hold of

My modulars are pretty strong/thick

My predicament is id like D2 beadlocks which I would have to weld myself ( no biggie ) and probably make the wheels for £300 with a set of D2 commercial steels I can get off a mate. But I'd like more offset, now I could spin the centres but I could end up with horribly off centre wheels or different offsets. Not good for racing

Or I could get adapters to landy pcd (wwhich are expencive) and then use landy beadlocks. But this gives huge offset which pits more stress on the bearings, ball joints and housing. But gives more stability. And means if I smash a wheel at KOV I can "borrow" one off of almost any other competitor intead of the few that will have D2 wheels. Which is really handy.

Don't even get me started on tyres :(

Shouldn't think you will find that many people at KOV racing on land rover axles, especially not this year

It will still be the majority axle. Theres a fair few switching to yota but not everyone is switching

Im going for d2 offset steels on beadlocks now anyway :)

Picked up 12 meters of tube to do my arches today, also finished of my mandrel for the mandrel bender I'm building to bend all the pipe.
Got a 8 ton, long stroke hydraulic ram coming soon.
