unlock drivers door and it takes 3 or 4 pulls to release the door. opens ok from inside. passenger door is same. 2nd disco and never had this problem with first, any remedies gladly received. It isn't the small springs I have fitted them before, can the outside handle be adjusted to make it work?

VERY common fault, you need to strip the door mech and fix it with a little half penny spring, which sell on ebay for £14.00 a set!

there is another reason for this which i have just had. The door (drivers in my case )wont open unless you jiggle and yank on the handle hard several timesthe inside mechanism works perfectly

What I did was break the door lock down into 3 parts
1 the locking mechanism itself
2 the internal mechanism
3 the external mechanism
my thinking was that 2 + are both attatched to 1 there for in my case 1 + 2 worked there was a fault with 3

As part of the external locking system there is a plastic rod with a spring round it which pushes on a lever which in turn pulls a metal rod to undo the lock that final rod is threaded so all i had to do was disconect it spin it in 5 or so turns and reconnect. Works perfectly.

I must say it is a very fiddly job too :)

i replaced my spring in the latch itself and after a day or so i had the same probs, a bit of WD40 is all that was needed in my case, on the other side of the door handle, over the spring and the pivot...works well...in fact it snapped back to the position it should have been in when i sprayed it :) all fine since, and no more looking a cock when trying to open the door for the misses while the misses is trying the door while in town now :D

Figured this out on mine too... its a near impossible job if you havn't got a complete set of long nose/ bent nose pliers, noodle arms and skinless fingers... but lacking most of these i still got it done with the no-pain no-gain method, wind it in clockwise (the furthest rod to the right-drivers door-rhd vehicle, has a small 90 degree bend on top which goes into the plastic hole on the mechanism, and has a tin clip on it) remove the tin clip take it out of the hole, wind it clockwise about 6/7 times and put it back in, should cure the op's problem if it isnt the springs as stated.
 
Mines a 1995 300tdi.
The front side door outer handles would need a wrench to get them to release (inside worked fine).
I found the adjusting clip mentioned above, but instead of adjusting it, I sprayed it and around it with WD40.
Now the outer latch works fine. I might adjust them a bit anyway in case they go bung again after the WD40 wears off.
I also silicon greased up the other parts and sprayed clear silicon lubricant down the glass guides. Everything works great.
Only problem I found was that in order to remove the side card, most of the small red push-in clips snap off or are buggered. They are overkill and did not need to be so strong. Seems that they are intended as almost a one-off use?
