Hi paul. tell you what mate i thought same as you, no way my td5 going for 1 of them. Once you have driven 1 all the other thing's don't come into it, i would never go back to my old td5 even though i loved it so much. JUst go to your local dealer test drive 1 and you will be hooked i tell you. all the best catch later, bigcol.:) :)

Col,

Cant afford one anyway. Thats not really the point but I just dont like the look of them. Perhaps if they changed the back door and stuck a spare back on it, it might be more bearable to look at.
Regards

Of course Paul, Landrover will not take note. They are not interested in selling Landrovers to Landrover enthusiasts as you are in such a minority. They are selling to people who want to buy a 'Life Style' vehicle and who would otherwise go and buy an BMW X5.

In a couple of posts ago I described my Series 3 as 'junk'. I didn't add that my 3 previous cars were all V8 auto Discoveries bought from new so I had previously learnt the experience of Discovery (un)reliability issues.

The first time buyer of a Discovery is going to be appalled at how many trips back to the dealer it is going to make. My wife has a Fiat Multipla and in over 60000 miles it has only seen the dealer for the service intervals. This is the expectation today. Rain coming in through the passenger door seal soaking the headlining (one of my vehicles newer problems) certainly isn't.

With ours the brakes locked up while we were driving, luckily we were only doing about 20mph at the time. Apparently it was a pin in the braking system snapped / came out. I think it must have been cracked since we bought it as it always bad a squeak when setting off, we had it fixed and it no longer made any noise, but now the squeak has started again so the discovery is going back to the dealer to be fixed. The AA guy we spoke to said its a common problem. Kind of makes you loose confidence in the car as worried if its going to happen on a motorway or some thing. This isnt just a normal fault like we get with all our other landrovers, this one could get you killed. We are very tempted to get rid of the car because of this problem, but also dont want to because the amount its dropped in value from depreciation.

Further to my earlier post regarding the suspension fault. I took my LR3 to my dealer and after one whole week of investigation they found the cause of the suspension fault to be a broken electrical connection to one of the height sensors. I am glad to get the car back as it has been sorely missed. All seems back to normal.
I am worried to hear about the brake problem which causes the sudden application of the brakes. My brakes also squeek when I first set off but I have just gotten used to the noise and not really flagged it up to the dealer as a problem.

Best regards,
Ian S-J

Just to keep you all posted. my d3 is going in for a new compresor fitted, the access height when you lower it is overheating. Me and my wife went on the experience on sunday at coniston hall, the lr3 that we went round in had the parkbrake fault which i found rather funny,:D but he did show me how to get it off with the jack handle,:D anyway see how we go when its done and see what goes wrong next:) :) p.s. even though all this and dealer being a pain in the arse, its still the best thing you could ever drive and after going on the experience, well i love even more now. Thanks for looking guys catch you soon. BIGCOL:rolleyes:

I have a Disco 3 S, just completed 20k miles. Only 2 problems so far - 1. Faulty air bag light, off road for 8 days. 2. Faulty handbrake which turned out to be the gear selection electronics, This required a man with a lap top to plug in download, upload and re-educate the vehicle! Apart from that no other problems and a great ride. Tyre wear is not too good though will probably only get 23k out of the pirellis.

good luck

I think Ramcon has been extremely lucky to suffer so few faults. The economy of my HSE (admittedly an auto diesel) has fallen from 24-25 around town to 20. My dealer say's there's nothing wrong with it. Is there any one else with an auto who can give a comparative mpg figure?

Best wishes

P.S. It is also interesting to look at;

http://landrover.haveyoursay.com/

I have pasted in a summary below....

November 2004 - Bought Discovery 3 HSE First Build - electronic melt down - Park Brake Failure - car left us stranded - took Land Rover 3 weeks to figure out what was wrong after changing many components.

July 2005 After the launch of this blog and exerting huge pressure on Land Rover - they replace my Build 1 car with a brand new Build 2 car - electronics system goes wrong with 400 miles on the clock! They replace the passenger air bag.

I give them a second chance - this is now news to the readers - the car goes wrong once again - with a Suspension Fault, Park Brake Failure and Transmission Fault all in the same week. I then am given a loan Discovery 3 SE which in a week also has a Park Brake Failure! So Land Rover replaces the loan car with a Range Rover Sport. This car is built on the same chassis as the Discovery 3 and uses the same electronic components. Guess what - this too goes wrong - Park Brake Failure!!

So I throw up my hands in the air and tell Land Rover that they have a problem - failure of 4 different Vehicles - yet they tell me this fault is somehow connected to me personally. Trying to blame my blackberry device claiming interference!

So they took the car back and refunded my money in full and I am no longer a Land Rover ower - but I continue to get a few hundred hits a day on this site and I am going to make sure that prospective owners are fully aware of the terrible QA problems this car suffers from.

I have to agree with one of the other posts about the ugly looks of the D3. The square back and no spare wheel looks pretty poxy to me. They have a slab back like the new Nissan Pathfinder and the new toyota utes, all aimed at the yank market. I feel that they have given over to the onroad clientelle rather than the stylish Disco2 that looked good but can really cut the mustard off road. I dont think I would drop a D3 off the 60 degree slope I went down this morning in my '01 D2.

As for fuel economy, I would love to get 25-30 mpg. My V8 auto is returning around 16-17 mpg. Fuel here in the outback is about $1.50 per litre (x 4.52 for gallons). I dont know how that relates to you guys but it costs me over $130.00 to fill it!

Still, it does everything I want it to and does it with a style you cant get from a Cruiser or a Patrol eh?

Hi guys i read with intrest all your comment's, but those of you not in a new d3 once you have had a go in 1, iam telling you they are ace to drive. and no mater how many problem's at least you have 3yrs warranty.(which is handy) I also read that you some of you are getting 20-25 to the gallon:eek: how the hell do you manage to do that, when we went on the experience we got 18 to the gallon that's the best we have done, BUT its 1st long run we have done, we are getting normally 16-17 to the gallon, round town, what you lot doing free wheeling everyware:D .I would like someone to tell me how many miles before i get the mpg you lot getting, I also see quite a few d3 for sale on ebay fetching good money, so if you want to sell your's there is your outlet. Keep up the good post's. p.s. had a new compressor fitted and new software waiting to go in again for new new updated software, will let you know after 18/02/06,and yes i still love my new car and wouldn't swap it only for a better model:D all the best people catch you later
