They have been making a funny noise for a while, like a more distinct "click" when starting a sweep from rest.
But today they (BOTH) seem to have jumped a cog as they come to rest quite a bit further up the screen than usual and when running the driver's side one clouts the upright edge of the winscreen surround quite hard on each sweep.

Although in this state, they seem OK, I don't trust them not to suddenly let go.

Is it possible that the linkage could have jumped a cog on the motor?

I know the nuts holding the spindle to the scuttle panel rust badly. Have a look as I think it's fairly accessible.

I have had a lickle read-up of it and will get on it as soon as it is dry.
It is the fact that both wipers are behaving the same that makes me think it is deeper than just the spindles that connect to the wiper arms.
Dreading finding some sh!t plastic part has worn and I'll need to buy a whole lot of other cr@p to get the part I need.
 
Theres no plastic parts it's an all metal assembly. The linkage is identical to D1 only the motor plug varies.
I had to replace mine as there was so much wear the wipers could be moved 6" or so, but fortuantely I had a D1 one on the shelf from a long scrapped 300tdi
 
Also, the linkage doesnt go to and fro, its a circular motion. For the wipers to be at a different position at each end of the sweep means something is wrong with the linkage itself. If it had moved on the motor shaft (which is splined) it would only affect the park position

I have looked at a coupla YouTubes to see how to get it off and both don't bother with unclipping the trim on the A frame, thank God, but both say remove the bonnet bolts and slide it forward a few inches.

The wipers now start higher up and go further over before finishing where they started, i.e. higher up. So relatively speaking they are moving throught he same arc, just the arc position has changed.
So I think it could possibly have just moved on the splined shaft, which is what I am hoping and that I can reposition it.
I am seriously hoping I don't have to buy any new bits as I am in France and that could prove a reet pain in the A!
 
When I did it I removed A pillar trim but didnt loosen the bonnet bolts. A pillar trim is a nuisance and getting the scuttle trim out isnt much fun either
As far as I can gather it is replacing the A pillar trim which is the PITA. as for removing or sliding the bonnet back, it seems to make it easier to ease the scuttle trim out from first one end, then the other, then off.

Get the feeling this may be a case of swings and roundabouts.

what was wrong with yours? Out of interest.
 
I didnt loosen the bonnet bolts as I had a bad experience 20 years ago not being able to open a bonnet after I had moved it! I should get over it really 😅 On mine every pivot was worn out and really sloppy.I took it apart to replace the motor as it was really slow and didn't park, it was lucky I had a linkage to hand when I got to it
 
Hi Stan, mine always hit the A pillar, for years, but one day I decided to have a look, why they hit the a pillar , so removed the bonnet and slid it forward a few inched removed the wiper arms, removed the lower pelum plastic cover to get to the wiper motor, to fine the complete assembly was loose, all I did needed to fix it was add 3 lock washers, under the nut’s, then put the pelum back and turn on the wiper on and off to get the arms in the correct place then refit the arm’s, not more banging on thee A pillar

But the real culprit was.......

It is as bad as it looks.

The motor was basically attached to nothing...... much.
Wonder it worked at all. But the symptoms I described exactly mirror what has happened, the motor had moved in its "setting" (I am being generous!).

It is blazing hot and I kept burning myself on bits of metal.
The rusty nuts and bolts didn't really want to separate so I spent an unconscionable amount of time working each nut to and fro, spraying it with WD, wiping it off, wire brushing it off, and even using a 6 mm die, hand held, to free the threads.
But, phew, I did finally get it all apart and even the bolts off the motor where they go into aluminium (Yikes!).
SOOO!
All set to put a new one in, if I can find one in Frogland, right hand drive.

Or I'll have to jury-rig one making one from my own bit of spare metal plate. And I still don't know how I am going to replicate the fancy mounting hole, metal and rubber/plastic washer type things.

The metal mounting plate uses very strange hole/washer/things which have been pressed
 
Wow, that’s just disintegrated , mine was just a bit of surface rust, on both sides, the seal, by the way the pelum is not suppose to seal on the windscreen, and the rubber is just to finish off and make it look good

If the worst comes to the worst I'll make my own mounting plate, but as I said I think I'll have to use rubber cut from an old inner tube and washers to make it seal to the rest of it as I cannot imagine being able to reuse the original ones.
That's do till I get back to the UK and can get a replacement. Shame as the motor runs fine.
 
Blimey, sorry to see it's that corroded Stan but hopefully a man of your calibre :) will be able to sort a temporary fix until you can get a replacement part (just a pain it's such an essential item). Mine looked like this in Nov 20 & as I need to get the screen replaced I will be paying close attention to it ! All the best.

Hi Stan, I,m hoping to collect an os rear door for mine from a place very near me on Monday, off a D2 scrapper (they've got two). I'll have a look to see if the wiper assy is still there & let you know. Meanwhile no getting too pis"ed at the village fate:):).
