Evening all, fitted new glow plugs, crank sensor and injector number 4. Car struggled to start eventually came to life but was running very badly revving up and down between 1000 to 1500 rpm chucking out greyish smoke.

Any thoughts please?

So you replaced the crank sensor and it started. Could it be the wire itself is not good but you've jiggled it enough to get a weak signal through?

It only kicked into life after pumping the throttle it wouldn't start without it but I imagine there is alot of crap in there of unburnt fuel.
The old crank sensor fell to pieces when took it out so they definitely wasnt helping the starting.
I will check that sensor is getting a supply but I checked wire seemed ok no damage.

The other issue may be it has skipped a tooth on timing chain.

It felt like car needed a good rev but as Dopey said that's what it might need.

If you put a cup full of Isopropyl in your tank it will mix with the water and burn it off, that's an old trick, I do it now and then (once a year or more)

Yea the filter should have a drain plug at the bottom of it, so you can drain the water off (its heaver)

I fitted a new filter and checked it last night no water drained out, considering engine swap now as completely fed up with it.

I assume if doing an engine swap that I need to get one from another manual P38 or can I get one from an auto just cautious if flywheel arrangement is different?

Flywheels can be changed. You have been trying to start it for some time with duff glow plugs, the cylinders will be full of fuel deposits. It will run like a bag of bricks for a while until that clears.

Ok will run it see what happens. Where is best place to buy the injection pump timing gauge and the pin that bolts into FIP?

I have a timing kit but doesn't include FIP timing tools.

Thanks.

Is there anyone in Crawley area who can come and help me as I really am struggling to diagnose what is wrong or just to check FIP is timed up for me?

I don't like begging but I am getting desperate now as it way above my head.

Many thanks.

Might be worth a look at the LZIR map. That's south of London. @ovalandrover might be down that way? If he isn't back in Oz.

Thanks @Grrrrrr he has been over a couple of times and is about 40 mins away, its not fair to keep dragging @ovalandrover up, he has been a true gent and done what he can to help me.

Do you know the best place to get a dial gauge and pin for injection pump?

I couldn't find on the tech archive about timing the injection pump sure @wammers had put something on there?

Timing the FIP is detailed clearly in RAVE.

@Grrrrrr just found an old article where you greatly provided the details to buy the adapter and dial gauge for the pump timing! I will purchase them and re-check pump timing. Thanks!!

If this doesn't resolve the issue then will take front cover off and check timing marks.

Good Afternoon All,

After much deliberation and fettling the engine eventually gave up, opening up the engine, it turns out there was damage deep inside the engine and is not worth repairing. I am now looking to get a 2nd hand engine installed.

Does anyone know anyone in Sussex who could replace an engine?

Thanks,
