Hi yer I have been on this forum a few months mostly looking in. But now I need some help and advice please.

I have a 1997 Disco ES TDI 2495cc

The other day I started it and drove a couple of miles then stopped at a set of traffic lights. As I went to pull away (I had not stalled it) I seemed to have lost all power. So I coasted to a stop and tried to restart it.
The battery seemed to be flat? So to cut a long story short I had it recovered home. 24 hours on charge and still would not start? Until I boosted it, then it sounded very noisy and just not right and it would not pull away. Any how's it is now with Harris-Mayes County Cars of Watford and they tell me that they have NEVER come across a knackered injection pump in all (40+) years in the game!

New pump £2k from a main dealer and £1300.00 from his supplier. However it is now in the hands of his specialist injection pump engineer. So I am waiting for the quote...

What do you guys reckon?

Regards Baza.:)

am confused!! is it a starter problem or a fuel pump problem.?? and what sounded noisy? the pump , the starter or the engine? things like .."it doesn't work" and "it was noisy" don't help unless we know what was not working and what was noisy!

As I said I started with a booster and it sounds very engine noisy. So it's not a starter prob.
I have been told it's the Diesel Injection pump that has failed.

Cheers for having a look...

so you had the battery on charge for 24hours and you still had to use a booster. that would point more towards a gubbed battery or the starter

I agree with slob. Either the engine turns over properly on the starter or it doesn't. If it does turn over ok, then either it starts or it doesn't. Can't you be a bit more clear?

Diesel Injection pump failed..£2k quoted!!

That's is what the guy at the garage has said. All I can tell you of what led up to the car packing up. Worked fine then would not after pulling away at lights. Battery seemed flat statred on booster but engine had no power you could not pull away without stalling it. And I have been told it's the injection pump. I just wanted your views because he had never heard of one packing up!

i isn't no eggpert on diesels my eggpertease lies in series landies and general automotive stuff.
so what your saying is yer engine died..it would only start with a boost even after an overnight charge... it started and didn't run worth a ****.(for litch...worth a ship)
yer man says its the pump but he's never heard of one failing before..
it been sugested you get yer battery checked.

now i'm guessing here but if yer battery id *****d then it may not have enough juice to get yer stop solienoid to operate..i.e it will start on the booster but as soon as the booster is taken away it dies.
this is pure speculation and it could well be bollocks but i think it makes more sense than a pump be the cause.

If the battery is knackered put a new one in, but before you do, unscrew the fuel solienoid and pull the little plunger/ballbaring out, then start it up and see if it runs now, if it does its a power/solienoid issue. So currently its only open enough to let a small trickle of fuel through i.e. tickover

Engine stays running after booster is taken off but no power to drive away.

The car is away at the garage with the pump being looked at by a injector pump specialist. But tomorrow I will suggest that idea to the indy garage. Thanks for the import discomania and slob.

All now sorted and home. £1300.00 lighter!

Symptom: Engine stalled would not start or drive:
Injector pump seized. Remove injector pump and fit recon' unit. Fit new timing belt, tensioners, front cover & anciliaary parts as listed workshop time and mechanical.

Battery is and was fine just would not start of drive.

  1. Air cond belt pulley
  2. Air cond belt adjuster pulley
  3. Front Cover
  4. Timing belt
  5. Timing Cover gasket
  6. Timing belt tensioner no lip
  7. Timing belt static idler
  8. Tensioner pulley spring loaded
  9. Reconditioned Injector Pump £548.00 + vat.
  10. Extra while there:Investigate ABS light staying on: fault= ECU relay and fit new.

so how do they explain the only starting on booster ??? i'm all dondislaboblated and i need a lie down

Buggered if I know! That's why I came on this site for help. But took it to the independent and that's what's happened.
