Guys,

I have just joined and I am looking for advice.

I am not mechanically minded so please be kind.

I have a 1996 Defender 90 pickup with an Ifor William canopy on the back.

It was great, has 64,000 miles on the clock and was really reliable.

While driving on motorway the oil light came on and literally at the same time the car slowed down. I am told the return pipe from the cooler had come off. Be kind if this is not technically correct.

Bottom line is engine will now start but makes a knocking sound. My mechanic informs me it is knackered.

What is the best plan? Pre problem I think vehicle was worth circa £4,000 - £4,500

Second hand engine from breaker?
Re engineered engine from likes of turner engineering?
Sell as is? Any suggestions on value?

Any suggestion or help would be appreciated.

whats your take on it.
Id see it as, do you want to keep it or not???

if not, 3 would get you the least money, or chuck a used engine in it.

If your keeping it, are you keeping it in the long term, or a couple of years, the foremer, if funds allow, go for a recon, if the latter, a used would be fine.

Tim,

Well in fairness you have highlighted my dilemma.

My wife and I just had a baby so the pickup is not big enough for the family but the vehicle is handy for trips to dump, fishing, taking dog out, fetching logs, etc...

A 2nd hand engine may be my preferred option but the question is where do I find one? Any suggestions?

You need to look again at the engine if its running it may not be as bad as you were told, you may get away with a bottom end rebuild. With out stripping the engine you wont know how bad it is

how can this question be answered?

Well in fairness there are 2 questions.

1. Where can I find a 2nd hand engine?

2. How much is it worth as it stands? For example if a 2nd hand engine fitted costs £1500 and previously it was worth £4500 is it now worth £3,000. Genuine question, I don't know how it works.

Genuine question, I don't know how it works. if you can do it yourself or get help from someone on here it will keep the cost down, but you haven't actually said which engine you have. as for the price it would also depend which engine it is
hope this helps

Can you expand on that?

You need to know just how bad things are

How long did you drive with the oil light on

Just how tight did the engine get

How bad does it sound now, did your mechanic tell you why it lost oil pressure

If your local to Merseyside Ide take a look at it for you, even help you chuck a second hand engine in if that's what it needs

Might not be as expensive as you think ..........

where you based, somone might be able to have a looksee.

you can always change the truck for a van/SW back, stick seats in it, etc, etc, etc...

or just use the centre seat for the baby seat :)
