That’d make your Avenger a lot of fun! Do it! :D

I’ve been thinking about the balues of these engines. Just think: when was the last time you saw a Rover or a ZR160 on the road?

They’ve all but disappeared :(

Which means these brilliant little engines are as cheap as they’ll ever be.

Hold on for a couple of years if you can, and the Lotus and Caterham boys with deep pockets will likely start pushing up prices (like they have with the Rover BRM B4 close-ratio PG1 gearbox)

I’ve got a couple of gearboxes and engines squirrelled away. They are a parts rather than financial investment for me though. :)

one tooth out wont hurt an engine, vernier pullyes that engine tuners use essentially do the same thing anyway to get more out of the engine,

On the subject of Rovers I think the scrapage scehme wiped a few of them out sadly and rover 45 or 75 dielse are a serieous choice for me once my golf comes to end of its life

PS love my MG ZTT diesel: we’ve had it since 2004. The kids came home from hospital in it, we continue to use it as our family wagon (2000 miles across France and Spain this summer) and given a choice I’d keep it forever. But the London LEZ is forcing me to conternance the unthinkable - and I’d worry that this will likely kill off any remaining MG Rovers in our cities :(

Apologies to David for the tangent! Can PM to chat further? In general it’s been a pleasure to own, but there are known issues with the ancillaries attached to the M47R (CDTi aka Td4) engine that are well described in these forums :)

It's a thought I've been musing for while. I'd mate it to a Ford type 9, 5 speed box. A bell housing is available to join the two together which is a help.

You could always move outside London and keep the ZTT. ;)I moved from Surrey to the Southwest 20 years ago and don't regret it one little bit.

Hmmmm. A diesel ZT would suit me just at the moment as I'm about to change jobs and the XC70 burns a bit too much fuel, what with being AWD and automatic.
It's that or an X-type at the moment.
I suspect this may unleash the hounds!

if you go with x type same issues that the mk3 mondeo tdci has also inflict them, so injectors ( which need to be coded), flywheels, clutch and leaky turbos which then run on their own oil ( which is an interesting experience i can assure you if it happens in a work shop! if you get one thats had all three done your laughing as they will easily pass 300k miles if looked after and a well speced jag or high spec mondeo is a very nice place to sit, the jag slightly in the lead due to better drivers seat ( you have to retro fit the st 220 recaros into a mondeo to get a decent mk3 seat )

Yup, Tim Fenna of Frontline engineering is your man :)

Except that my work (and my wife's) is in London, and the kids love the schools that they are currently in... and we're happy where we are. Other than the LEZ bit. And the lack of a barn to park all my projects in ;)

I was expecting some kind of battle to the death but the crank pulley came straight off with no struggle.
Just need better light (and better glasses) so I can see the pulley properly (and get rid of the multiple tippex marks that the previous idiot has daubed on).
A lot of tippex has been used to achieve such incorrect timing.

The KV6 I got as a replacement for my failing one had a loads of tippex marks on the pulleys. Non of them were actually correct, although the timing was, thankfully.

That's a bit strange - unless who ever did those marks also marked the belt to ensure that the timing remained correct?

Who knows.
When I saw the mixture of random markings, I timed the cams from scratch, then added my own marks, which would confuse everyone but me.

Just went for it :) and got tons done (by my standards).
The cams are now aligned. Please verify.
Drained the coolant. Oh Dear. The bottom hose was crunchy so, rather then fight with the clip on the rad I just sawed through it. Photo of the coolant and hose attached. K-Seal anyone?
The tensioner didn't look great and was rather gravelly.

You'll know about it if you have Kseal in the coolant. It smells like putty and leaves you tearing at your skin because of the itchy copper fibres in it.
The cams look fine now. ;)
