Hi Guys& Gals.
Anyone out there changed the small gas strut fitted to the cubby box lid on a 4.6HSE P38.
I have managed to prise the cap off the pin fitted to the lid but can't see how the bottom fixing is removed.
Any tips or advice?????

Thanks Redrange,
Is your motor still clean???????????
Will probably drill the rivet out , tap the hole M4/M5 and fit a button head screw with a dab of mild loctite to stop turning.

no! its bloody filthy. needed washing before trip to north yorkshire last week, thought whats the point, and now 750 miles later on slimey damp roads, well you can imagine, and its full of tree pines, bloody xmas tree's!
i didnt tap mine, just used 2 nuts together. its fine.

With a long enough pop-rivet there is no movement restriction at all and the lid just jumps up. I used a black 3.2 x 10 aluminum rivet so it even looks factory fitted.

Thanks for that. Did you remove the bracket to drill the old rivet out as a) the passenger seat is in the way and b) the old rivet is lower than the top edge of the cubby box. If you removed the bracket is it easy to do or does the whole cubby box and half the centre console have to be removed to get at it?

I did remove the whole lid assembly for the reasons you mention and the fact that someone had spilled a sugary cola-type drink all over it. Once removed it was easy to drill the rivet out and put the new damper in place. I seem to recall that the lid is fastened with three counter-sunk screws holding the hinge in place and to get access to that one needs to remove the plastic cover over the rear ashtray which in turn I think was fixed with two screws on the sides of or beneath the ash tray insert.

In any case I recall it as quite an easy job.

Balmgren-your a star!!! thanks for that. I had visions of stripping half the car down.
Canyon, I searched for a spurious part without any joy. Finished up getting it from Rimmer Bros. who were cheaper than Egay. Rimmer supplied LR part and do not list a spurious.
Considering the strut is about a quarter the size of the tailgate strut yet double the price, it's a rip off really.

Thanks folks-job done, a doddle. Even managed to get away with re-using the rivet. Over in the U.K. at the moment so I didn't have access to my taps to thread the bracket but as it turns out using the old rivet was o.k.
