Hi everyone this is my 1st post and i hope someone can help
On Sunday i was rear ended whilst at traffic lights, i had the gear selector in P since my parking brake developed a fault a couple of months ago and i don’t think my car was shunted forwards so it took the full impact from behind without travel or shunt to car ahead.
The damage to the car that hit me was very bad and mine only appeared to have a damaged bumper, myself and the other driver were ok so all good...i thought.
The problem i have is that my dashboard has ‘died’ whilst driving on each occasion since! Everything goes off and the dial needles drop below the digits so i don't see speed, temp, fuel etc! this has lasted anything from a few seconds to a few minutes before all appears normal again....until i then get warning lights for transmission fault, ride height, no special functions available and a couple more that i can’t remember but will take note of if it happens again.
Can this behaviour be caused by the crash or is it just sheer coincidence? please spare my blushes for when the assessor from the insurance comes to see the car i don't want him/her laughing in my face at a ridiculous suggestion...or is it?

@LandyLover 3 , out of curiosity , did any airbags go off please

as mentioned by @biketeacherdave make a full claim as they may think it’s beyond economical repair

However until is looked at properly u won’t know 100% if it’s the crash or not that’s caused the errors

The crash has killed your car......make a full claim the fact it was in park means it's now total loss

plus 1, also wonder about the airbags , plus with it being in park without handbrake applied i dread to think what damage it’s caused

will be interesting to see what the ins assessor says
 
Wow really @biketeacherdave ??? Thank you for your prompt replies.. It seems to drive fine apart from all the dash/warning lamp issues and i just thought perhaps the sensors had been disturbed from the impact.
@gstuart the airbags didn’t go off and apart from the bumper and left corner reverse sensor there didn’t seem to be much damage.
The ladies has informed her insurance and i’ve yet to receive a call from them as she told me i would. I have informed my insurers of the incident ( for information only as i was instructed to do from policy docs )
Would it be wise for me to ask the landrover dealers for an assessment before the insurers assessment?

Yours was in park hence the bigger problems your having I expect the gearbox is proper trashed autos dont like being rear ended in P.

Yes get it into a local main dealer asap

thks, alas because there so complicated it can take time to investigate what’s wrong with it, ins may just write it off, however plus 1, get a garage to have a look, but ring ur ins company first to advise them it’s un drivable and only since the accident so that don’t try and blame it on something else

there’s also a crash sensor module inc sensors and expect the garage will first plug it into diagnostics along with a full inspection on the ramp

at least then ur be in a better position

Thks, did think the bags would have gone off, also thought that ref the gearbox and it being trashed because of the impact

will be interesting to see what the dealer says
 
If the cars till holds whilst in P and all the gears do what they are meant to I would think thats a red herring, quick gerabox oil change will tell you all you need to know.

Tell the assessor what has happened, he might think you are trying to get a free fix for an existing problem.
Depending on cars age, they might write it off.

Sure I have read of binnacle faults before, poss loose plug or an internal fault, BBA Reman in Kent do all that sort of gear, give them a ring.

Still haven't heard from ‘their’ insurers but i’ve spoken to local land rover dealers who have said i should call my breakdown recovery and state the car is undrivable due to warning lights etc.
I called my local garage to ask him his opinion and he put me in touch with his firm of solicitors to deal with everything, they are arranging recovery of the car and a replacement car whilst mine is off road and damage is assessed, all a little daunting if i'm honest!
 
Airbags only tend to go off when the accident is a head on, or near head on collision, as far as I know. They are to prevent the human being flying forward under the impact, although more sophisticated ones may work on a side impact, I have seen a Merc where that happened but in a rear end the human being simply gets shoved into the seat and the head rest.

As for the damage, ensure your insurance company gets a decent engineer to do an assessment, preferably at a LR garage.
By the way, if the accident is not your fault, by English law there is no compunction on you to accept an insurance company's write off value. You are entitled to get it fixed. They keep fu cking quiet about this as they all p1ss in the same pot and want to keep all their costs down. They'll make it difficult for you, but in the end you'll get your car back as you want it rather than having to take a paltry sum and then go out and by another unknown heap of (possible) trouble, or else buy back your own car back (ffs!) off the insurance company and then use the write off money to rebuild it.

Thank you, judging by my confusion and cluelessness in all things insurance i’m sure i’m gonna need it

Tbh I do not know if the stored faults are dated?

I do know on the trucks the genuine diag sftware does date the fauls, ie fault first occured and so on, but know the aftermarket kit does not.

indeed at the end of the day u want confirmation 100% that ur disco was or wasn’t damaged by the accident

plus getting a full written report

agree with @lynall ref the diagnostics , as there may be some old codes that don’t have any bearing , garage will read the codes, write them down, clear , then rescan to see what new codes come up

to be honest didn’t release that ref the rear impact and air bags

on the D3 , there are airbag impact sensors

2 x at the front
In each front doors
On each B pillars by the seat belts
1 x each side of the boot area near the D panels

crash sensor module , is under the centre glove box, the crash sensor module can be read by specialist companies , gap iid can reset them if there’s no internal damage

also learn something very day , as I thought if an ins company wishes to write ur vehicle off u have to accept it and can’t get ur vehicle repaired , bless u for the knowledge
 
There are only two options

1) They will write it off
2) They will fix it.


Either way don’t worry about what’s wrong, if they take the car to be fixed they will find it

other option it still won’t matter you’ll have a new one

So don’t say anything let them sort it, is what you pay them for :)
 
Get a claim going with your insurance company, that’s why you have insurance, as a non fault accident they will claim all costs, even your excess from third party insurers. It’s what yo pay for in premium, let them do the work.
