I would expect that in the general mix from a garage it would be mainly
Engine oil
Gear oil
Water
Auto trans oil
Hydraulic oil
Anti freeze
Petrol

In that order? The only major prob is the water and anti-freeze? Petrol in smaller quantities is fine, gear oil mixed with the rest is that a major issue, or will it block the filters, i'm using 100,50 and 5 micron,?
The water and antifreeze will both settle out if left for about 4 weeks?

Thanks for everyones input in all this

Brake fluid
Thinners
White spirit
Screen wash
Tea
Coffee
Coke
Paint
contaminated fuel not just petrol diesel mix
Brake cleaner
Brake dust

Anything goes in, some use the oil drainer as a wash tank. To be fair most of it will burn. Jeep used to recommend brakefluid as an injector cleaner!

Ok in reallity am i likely to kill my TD4 using this stuff if left to stand for a month, water and gunge draind off then filtered to five micron and then thinned with petrol to gain the same flow rate as diesel?:confused:

Im using stuff that I generate so I know what's in it, ie just oil of differing types. It's a tricky one when you have no control. To be fair most places aren't that bad. If they know what you're using it for they may be more careful

Thin if necessary before filtering as it makes filtering easier and quicker.

Ok then, I now have a conical container with 2 taps, 1 a little higher than the other, i've got about 25ltrs of contaminated (god only knows whats in it), i've rough filtered it so its ready to go in the conical tank, i will leave it to settle for a month (already thinned). Then drain off whatever is at the bottom and filter the rest to 5 micron, chuck it in the tank and keep my fingers crossed.
I will of course keep you posted...... Wish me luck:frown:

Gotta clean the conical tank first lol

It will be fine. Water is the important thing to remove as it passes through the filters. All the other crud will be caught at 5 micron level. Anything smaller will do no harm whatsoever. Its what I've been doing for many years.

So will anti-freeze, etc drain of with the water?

If this goes wrong she'll kill me !!!!!!!!!!!:(

Why don't you do a test ? Bung oil, water, anti freeze, what ever, into an empty water bottle, shake it up and wait for it to settle!

I won't know whats settled out of it, antifreeze etc, i know the water will settle just not sure wether thinners and stuff will settle, soilds are not a prob they'll filter out. If peeps on here who know about these things say all the harmful **** will either settle or filter out then i'll take the risk and try it. I've got 25ltr of crappy stuff and i'll try that before getting 100s ltr :)

Is thinners harmful? Is it worse than petrol? It'd be in relatively small quantities. It's a tricky one:( if there's any at all of course!

I would expect thinners to be ok, i may well be wrong but thinning oil with petrol is ok and would think thinners would be similar, point i was trying to make is, there could be anything in there (as you pointed out) but whats harmful and whats not? water is the main baddy, anything likely to be in there that will stay mixed with the oil and bugger the engine?
Shifty's been doing for a while and says "it'll be fine" or as we say up north "be reet":D

Too much paint thinners will cause problems with the fuel vapour locking. It may also start to eat the various rubber O rings and components within the fuel system such as pump diaphragms etc..

Lets hope there ain't any in there then, can't really see why there'd be much used in a garage:eek:

I'm pretty sure that bodyshops have to keep used paint thinners separately for recycling as its so flammable. My local indy garage has to keep contaminated fuel separately from recovered oils.

Makes sense, i've got 35ltrs standing now i'll keep checking it to see if it separates which it should do before i get any more, unless of course i can get straight engine oil.

Its been standing 4 days and it still looks the same, it'll prob look the same in weeks/months to come tho, will i be able to tell when i drain the water off when i get to the decent stuff?

At least it'll be easier and quicker to filter. when you say weeks? How long would you recommend? I was thinking 4. I can store 60 ltrs in this conicle tub, mixed 50/50 with derv would last about 6weeks, so if i can get away with letting it settle for 5 weeks i can get a little in front in case of any probs.

Hard to say. Depends on whats mixed in with the oil. I leave mine three months to settle but I have the space and oil drums to do so. Never had a problem yet with water in the fuel.
