As said, this forum is for many the 1st place to seek advice when things go wrong. It's not a representation of reliability.

I own an Audi TT as well and the forum for that is just the same even though they are extremely reliable. Can't get much more reliable than an Audi really!

We've had our 2003 Freelender 1.8 since it was 6 months old and it has been very reliable indeed. The engine is very good and is used in many racing cars including lotus caterham and westfield. The headgasket is a weakness and we had ours replaced, this is partly due to lack of cooling in the car and a weakness in the head gaskets used but you can buy a stronger reliable version.

Every other aspect of the car has been faultless. It's great to drive, handles well, easy to work on resulting in cheaper bills for servicing etc. It is also very good on fuel for the size of vehicle. It's my wifes car but i tell you, I would really miss it if she sold it, not that she plans to since she loves it too.
 
my KV6 ES did not have cruise control, so maybe something to check on before purchase.

The Freelander is a good car off road, but seemed more "wallowy" than our current X-Trail - the X-T seems more "car-like" in its drive, but is surprisingly good off-road.
The interior surfaces of the X-T duz have a lot to be desired compared to the Freelander, but has a bigger boot space with "load flat" capability.

I changed from a Hippoo to an X-T, primarily because of reliability. In one year my hippoo spent more time off-road (and on ramps) than on the road. In the last year, I have only needed to put petrol in the X-T.
All freelanders are a gamble, with well documented problems. The X-T diesel also has well documented problems. At the end of the day, its yo decision.
 
I spent 9 years working with Toyota, Even they are far from perfect and when they go wrong thet hit your pocket

Rav 4 diesels with Flywheel issues , Petrols with Oxy sensors faults wheels corroding

The more u find out about the product the more you will find the problems

I have just bought a 02 TD4 5dr GS auto on ebay of all places bought it for £5400 with 72k miles

First week the starter went, after 20 mins of picking it up the autobox leaked

Cost me £600 to fix the box, £40 to fix the starter and spent £150 or so on service items, cd autochanger and a roverron

but even with £6k in it i would struggle to buy a similar car and now sorted im very happy with it

If your ok getting your hands dirty and have a spare car to fall back on fine,

Spare parts are a plenty for Land Rovers and normally can be fixed on your drive way

If you cannot change a spark plug and the car breaking down one cold morning is like loosing an arm dont buy a freelander.
 
Had my TD4 for 18 months, not a great deal gone wrong with her and shes coverd 150000 miles now.Loads of room in the back with the seats folded down if you get the 5 door version and a very nice drive.
BUY BRITISH AND BE PROUD;)
 
ive had mine a 2002 td4 manual gettin close to the 40mpg since feb this year and is great the only thing is it has a slight leak on the seal above the door !! lol aint a real landy without one !!!!

Wind the window right down, stand on the inside of the door and rest your knee at the point the rear of the door frame joins the door, grab the top of the frame and give it a sharp tug inwards, Keep closiing the door to monitor how far you pulled it

i'm on my third freelander in 7 years and not had a problem apart from.....

all three have had the rear door seal replaced and the one i got now, td4 gs auto has had abs sensor replaced under warrenty and the air con condensor replaced under warrenty which also led to a new radiator replaced by the dealer cos of heavy handed spanner monkey:D :D


top car for every day use!!

defender is just not practical for me
disco too big
rangey too big and expensive
rangey sport just too much!!

freelander spot on;)

couldn't see me in a slitty pretender at all:p
