I went to pick up the P38 today. It didn't come home with me.

Set off at 6am and arrived at 10am. Seller not in sight, yard locked. Phoned and phoned and phoned.

He was seen on whatsapp after I phoned him the first few times and they rang out so he deliberately avoided them. After phoning a dozen or so times he turned his phone off.

Myself and my friend in support bubble (to drive my old car home) both took a day off self-employed work for this, as did my sister who looked after my dogs. I've got to cancel my car insurance I took out on it which will likely cost me a month + admin fee which I think will be about £100 and a tank and a half of fuel about £100 too. The cost of this to us is about £1000. Large enough to be justifiably annoyed about surely.

As we couldn't get any contact from him, we replied from a separate ebay account and another phone number about a different car in his listings. Phoned straight away on another phone.

When confronted, he claims his nephew fell off of his motorbike and that's why he didn't turn up. Maybe I'm unreasonable but I don't believe him.

Of course he's got £900 of mine still which apparently he can't get back in my back account tonight. He claims by tomorrow afternoon. Once that is back with me I'll see if I've calmed down at all but at the moment I feel like taking him to small claims court. As much as anything he was pretty rude and unapologetic on the phone.

My question is does anyone have a P38 4.6 for sale (pre 2001 tax hike preferred, as is Thor electronics), so that i can at least try to transfer the insurance rather than cancel...
Thanks in advance!

Name and shame when you get your money back.personally I'd never part with money until I had the car.and he wouldn't have a yard to come back to.

The £900 deposit is sure annoying but worst case I can claim it back through the bank - I did it specifically so I wouldn't waste my time with it sold from under me - I've shown the bill of sale to a few people and there's a good argument to say that this is my property already. That said I definitely don't want it now, 3 month dealership sales of goods act or not I know there's more problems to come if I gave him a second chance.
It is the time that frustrates me the most. nevertheless, the world still moves and I've seen a nice diesel from a long standing member which looks to be the ticket

I'm sure there are plenty of members who would book appointments with him and fail to turn up :D I do bear a grudge before you ask. :D:D

That's a bit shïtty to say the least.
Give him until Monday then if you have to go back, you can deal with him directly. His claim may be honest but that is something you'll need to find out.
At least he has a business you can go to and not someone's false address.
I do feel for you especially all the effort you've made you've every right to be angry!! :(

Oooooo! Now that's just plain nasty.

Hope it doesn't put you off owning one of these cars and yes, I'd definitely recommend a diesel over a v8 for just a little more economy and reliability so if you can find one- especially off a forum member, then that would be the way to go, methinks. Hang in there, man..... give him hell but also be grateful that it wasn't a lot worse.

Still..... same request from me. Selfie at time of delivery followed by more at 10 day intervals. Gives me something to look forward to.

:D

Things must be pretty bad in KL is all I can say :p:D:D

They are, they are...... we are in another lockdown until 4/2 and it looks like that's going to be extended.

I'm using the time to work through my "Things to do- urgent" list, although I STILL haven't gotten round to tackling my sunroof. That's tomorrow when I have a mate coming over to help me dismantle it. Still won't be able to use the car until my new driver pack arrives from John Craddock, though... and there's some sort of BREXIT/Covid related delay going on there as well... but we're getting there.

So yeah.... a newly minted owner getting to grips with his P38 is definitely something to make these long days go by more easily.

:D

I'll say this right now though, in all seriousness. These cars demand a lot more than just deep pockets. They demand a genuinely enthusiastic owner who is willing to get his hands dirty and willing to learn the car and who has the technical ability and pockets deep enough to make it all come together and HE needs a community of knowledgeable peers to lean on. I've never met a millionaire who could hold on to his Rangie (from Classic all the way to L405) for any length of time after the warranty ran out if he didn't get intimately involved with getting to know the car and keeping it running and that's a fact. I hope our buddy @jpor here knows what he's getting into, has the enthusiasm and ability to own one of these beasts and that we'll be able to supply the rest.

Dopey's car? Go for it.

My f@cking arse. Everyone has a phone these days. Doesn't take a moment to ring and cancel, especially when you know people are travelling.

Thanks, got the depsoit back and I'm hitting him with intent of claim for court - not because I want money back for damages just because I want to waste some of his time

I bought Dopey's car last night - I'll do a post on the Members Vehicles/Projects thread this weekend but for now, here it is when I got in last night

I'm happy for you man... but sad for @Dopey. You put so much of yourself into the car over the time you own it, it becomes a part of you. I don't know if I'll ever be able to part with mine even though by any logical analysis I should have gotten rid of it several times over by now.... sold onto some unsuspecting youngster, scrapped it, given it over to the armed forces or fire brigade to use as a target during exercises or just plain rolled off some cliff so that I can just get on with my life.... with a Land Cruiser.

But no..... the worst car I ever owned has now become the car I've owned the longest at 16 years this year. Turbocharged Mitsubishis, Alfa Romeos, Peugeots, hydropneumatic Citroëns, BMWs, Mercs, a Subaru and a Smartcar have all come and gone and yet the Solihull Horror is still with me.

I wish you the best with Dopey's car and I'm glad you got something that has been cared for that you can continue where he left off..... and seeing as how it's Dopey's car then maybe selfies at 30 day intervals, huh?

:D

Glad you got it sorted. Shame it was a à bad experience for both you and your friend who helped out.
Good luck with your new '38;)

If I would had kept it, things would have just deteriorated more on it, sadly my illness won't let me do what needs doing on it, you see too many cars sitting outside people's house just run down because they can't get rid of them, I don't want the same thing to happen to this RR
