The Rubber Bags perish over time i personally spray them with a rubber rejuvenator every now and then to help them last but of course the adhesive doesn't last forever so eh you should get 8yrs from a quality bag..

Aside from that just keep an eye on the system and watch the compressor doesn't burn out from constantly feeding a leaky bag..
so theres no actual maintenance you can do but replace broken/worn parts which for many is a garage bill,it would be nice if everybody could learn and afford too keep things right ,but on a 20 yearold 4x4 coils make sense and are for some and daft to expect different

Well yes.

But anyone who is expecting to run an old, cheap and presumably worn out RR on a shoestring is, well asking for trouble..

how would you maintain it,you dont you just fix it as parts break

when I came out in the morning and one corner was down, that gave me a big clue something was perished and leaking air over the driveway. it came up with the others so pump and valve block were working. the tests for these are on the forum.

the car gives you warning, a sagging corner tells you its leaking. the airsprings have been on the car the same length of time, so if one is perished to leaking, the other three are not far behind. change them together.

the usual case is.. one airbag leaks it gets left for weeks.. the pump is feeding a leak, the airbag get replaced. the next airbag goes.. same thing.. by the time all 4 have been replaced the pump is now buggered from feeding leeks, then the system gets called unreliable.

this isn't rocket surgery.

rubber will perish at the same rate for all airbags, if one goes the others will soon too.. and if the rubber there is perished you'll be assured the O-rings in the valve block will be perishing to hard as well. so change them. its a £30 kit and takes about an hour with a cup of tea. same with the compressor piston sleeve.

maintaining is thinking about what has been done and when last. you don't change your gearbox oil when the transmission dies, or the engine oil when seizes ? if the EAS is dropping a corner its leaking air. something has perished. its all about the same age so change it *before* it fails.. that's maintenance. changing 'when' it fails is repair.

or any car but you can eliminate the eas from your worries

Yes but you'd still have to drum up £300 for a spring kit plus labour.

And an EAS system as said is simple to overhaul, and as i said on a cheap runabout a good EAS system should outlive the car..

they don't.

2xP38's in the family and the failures on one are zero. a perished bag is not a failure it's wear and tear. the valve block and compressor were overhauled as preventative. the other P38 in the family had a perished airbag and all 4 were replaced, the only failure due to a perished diaphragm that took 17 years since manufacture to occur. a couple of quid part and an hour to change it. both had arnott GenII's back when arnott were giving a lifetime warranty.

2 P38's with 14 years of use between them and the only 'failures' have been wear and tear. so they haven't gone wrong. rubber has perished and they are both 2001 vintage. i've replaced more water pumps in that time on both of them.
I'm presuming road use? With the nose in the air and the ar*e in the mud it's a lot of pressure for an old bit of rubber with some Nivea rubbed in lol. Coils snap too, but I find them more dependable in sticky situations. Don't want an airbag blowing dropping down on my 32" wheels going round a bend either  Maybe that's just me... :)

thats not maintenance that fixing a worn part or garage bill, changing engine or gearbox oil is maintenance ie you dont wait till you can see a problem

put it in its high setting.. air that is not coils... as coils have one setting. when its in it high setting, this is the tricky bit, get on your knees and look at the back airbags. do they look shot and shredded yes/no ? stand back up. that's it.

on the pump.. is it taking time to come up to height. ?? hmm..// that would mean the air going in is reduced .. get a small ring spanner under to the compressor output pipe start the engine, put your thumb over the end. (this is in the tech section)

watch what its doing.. if it isn't doing it like it should its telling you something. read the signs.

thats not maintenance ie like oil change ,greasing or adjustments

I've green laned them and regularly tow with them, a 3 tonne capacity tilt trailer with a range rover on the back. EAS is the mutts for towing and off road.

why not remove the worries of HGF slipped liners or the coolant system and remove the engine and instead cut holes in the floor for your feet like a fred flinstone car
a good few people can buy a cheap p38 do do a job, they tend to be diesel but if v8 theyve wasted their money unless they can get a cheap replacement, with eas springs is a doable, fixing the eas might be if they had the ability but not all do
