In the past, AP were good, no idea these days though.

No, that's the problem. Borg & Beck used to be part of AP but they split off and took the technology with them. I'm not sure if AP even make clutches anymore of if this is just old stock or whether it is shipped in from China. I am hoping like hell it is still made where it used to be and the standard hasn't dropped.

Given Land Rover (or LUK / Valeo / Borg&Beck or whoever the original manufacturer was) must have covered their costs for the production run and each replacement part must be pure profit it is hard to see how they can justify it being nearly 3 times the price. You'd have thought Land Rover might be a little more respectful of those of us who try to keep the marque alive and kicking. There's room in the market for those buying a £110k motor and 20 years later those less fortunate to try maintain these ground-breaking vehicles.

Jaguar have a club where you can buy the parts off them because they know you'll just shop around the internet and go elsewhere. How Land Rover haven't woken up yet is a mystery. Look at Marty developing a filter for the RF unit. The fact it was even worth his while is a damning indictment.

Good luck mate

Fact is, it can't last much less time than your last one did. Harsh I know, but true!
Is there not a bmw option as its their engine?

Odd as i've known a RRC diesel clutch last well over 100k.
Pulled original Borg and Beck clutch off a 91' VM, twas an avid tow cow too.
Bugger it. I just cannot face having my wallet raped by Land Rover. I'm going to have a punt on the AP clutch kit. Wish me luck ...

Ap was alright on a XJR6 I did about 6 months ago 10k and some pretty hard pulls in an RWD 370hp super saloon and it's been fine chap says it still grabs like a MOFO. :D

The M51 isn't a powerhouse, i'd put your failure down to defective components..

Should find out at the weekend if all goes to plan. Half wondering whether to buy a new clutch fork as all the rest is new.

You might want to rethink that, about 10 years ago the cross shaft and fork were close to £170.

No way? I figured about £17!
By all means check but my clutch went to the floor on its mot about then, friend of mine has his own work shop ( I help him if and when I can and I get to use the lift ) when we got the box off somebody had drilled out the dreaded pins out to fit bigger ones so the shaft broke in two, at the time shaft on back order could be two weeks and £170 ish didnt want my car stuck on Phils lift for two weeks so he says lets weld it up. I turned the shaft in the bell housing while he welded both sides of the fork to shaft it turned freely when cool so back together it went and it was still like it when I sold it last year.

Exactly what I thought would happen if I drilled them out! I banged a pop-rivet shaft up the centre of the pins!

Is the release fork shaft moving freely? When my pins sheared I took the shaft out and copperslipped it while I had the housing off. A couple of grease nipples for the bearing areas wouldn't have gone amiss. Pull the slave cylinder off and check for free movement. Good luck.;)

I am wondering whether Moly grease might be a better idea than copper-slip? Got some left over from a CV boot job. Might be smoother? Thoughts @wammers?

Hmp, moly and copper slip is 3 I have. If they don’t work then how am I still rolling

If others are available then fair enough, for all LR know best grease is goats fat, they wouldn’t know as they haven’t tried it ;)
