Might get shot down here but owning a genuine tax free series 3, I find it rather a shame that I see so many other "tax free" series 3's for sale on ebay and alike knowing full well that they are non tax free series 3's with series 2 identities on them.

Basically these vehicles are nothing more than ringers that should be named and shamed as eventually it will spoil it for the genuine historic vehicles out there.

Also some unsuspecting buyer will buy a ringer and have it confiscated.

Some current examples:

Hi I agree their are some ringers on Ebay
but I think most are genuine, my own 88"
is a bitsa 1965 chassis 1977 bulkhead&
wings 200 TDI disco engine does this make
mine a ringer. Im 67 years old and Ive
known the landy for 40 odd years.
Keeping old cars on the road in original condition
is in a lot of cases beyond the average working man
be it cost or time or skill or all three of these reasons
not all of us can afford to be rivet counters nor
would want to be.
I for one enjoy my landy for what it is
and use it as it is as do many others
so lets not Knock these landrovers but be glad
their there. Cheers Stuart:eek::eek::p:p

Obviously yours is genuine. Of course.
But of the 3 you so casually accuse of fraud, only the second is slightly iffy as its called a series 3 but is 1968.
The other 2 have series body parts but how do you know it's not 2a chassis and running gear. You know, the bits that actually matter.

I suggest you check the rules on vehicle identity, wind your neck in and cruise eBay looking for tax exempt vehicles with coil spring and disk brakes.

2nd listing is ended. I've informed both other sellers that their vehicles are being discussed on here. Lets wait to see if they wish to respond before condeming them.

Aint worth worrying about even if they are dodgy an dvla find out they wont do owt.

What year did they stop becoming tax free?
i know my Rangie missed out by a couple of years,
Any vehicle manufactured up to and including 1972 is tax free. Includes first few months of 1973 if registered then as it may have been made in 1972.

pre 1973 is tax free but it's not about that.

It's the fact that these people are claiming that the series 3's they are selling are from 1968 when the first series 3 wasn't made until 1970.

and Goonarmy is right, the dvla would do f*** all about it if you reported them.

1997 or jan 98 i think, thats 25 years from 1972, tax exempt vehicles must be before jan 1 st 1973.

think it was april 1973

ps my series is a series 2 with a series 3 front end and its proven to be genuine 1961 by vosa and believe it or not it did come up on the computer as series 2 when i took it for its MOT on thursday

so as dodgy as mine looks its deffo not a ringer so what makes yer think the ones on ebay arent similar cases to mine

ps while yer on ebay try and find a good series 2 or 2A bulkhead worth a damn under £900

I bought a reasonably restorable S2a bulkhead for under a ton Johnny.Good thing about being up here, too far for you guys to travel. Needs door pillars and some footwell work but thats all. I will be using it on a S2a resto eventually.

I think it's coz they're being sold as series 3 from 1968, which dun't exist. would like to know what it says on the logbooks.

verry true id love to see the chassis numbers for the fukkers or the chassis rail construction for that matter or weather theyve got synchro in 1st n 2nd for that matter :D:D:D

Christ - touched a nerve there!

Yea I know the rules, and I know the differences between a 2 and a 3 to know what is what.

if yu fit a s3 front on an s2, would that still have all the points?

Yea you still get all the points.
Only the running gear counts tbh.

The obvious dodgy ones are when you see "series 2's" with series 3 bulkheads, which is a major feet to change, (looms etc) and then topped off with series 3 sills! Why would you bother with them?
