An article in December's LROI mentions that there is a suggestion that a blanked off EGR will, in future, be a fail, along with engine remapping, as part of the compliance with the EU directive.

The only definite change is that from April 2012 the safety & security issues relating to towbars and towbar electrics will apply.

I just hope the "suggestion" isn't adopted.

Do diesels "qualify" for a full cat emissions test? Section 7.4 only refers to a smoke test and the appropriate approved test equipment, unlike section 7.3 for spark ignition engines which has a specific section for the cat test.

Then to muddy the waters even further in section 7.1 in the "reasons for rejection" column point 3 it states "A catalityc converter missing where one was fitted as standard"

I agree with what you've put above but yet again the govermant have managed to write a document that confuses the rest of the English speaking population.

Surely if the tester knows the car doesn't need a full CAT emissions test then he doesn't need to check for the presence if a CAT and therefore can't fail it for not having one.

There has also been a lot of talk about remaps being checked, but being the sado that I am I've had a look through the MOT inspection manual and there's no mention of it or EGR valves to be checked.

I know the date on the bottom say's 1st Jan 2012 but is there any chance of this changing again before next year?
 
I understand it as An HC test is an emmision test for a spark ignition a smoke test is the recognised emmision test for a diesel... its still an emmision test...... maybe an mot tester can confirm??

My 1999 defender left the factory without a cat as the shaft for the pto winch runs where the cat would be. Does that mean that all the utility company defenders are gonna be un-MOT'able.

I can't see how they can tell if a cat was or wasn't there in the same way that an anti-rollbar is there on some models and not on others.

The LRO article mentions that these are still in the "suggestion" phase and may be introduced in 2012. It doesn't have to be in January.
