To take the head off you have to remove the timing gear anyway...!!

Only difference is if you just replace the timing chain, to can do it with moving anything, so the timing is pretty much spot on when it is replaced (unless of course the chain snapped/slipped, then it will need retiming anyway...)

Question is, do u strip it all to check for damage ( I bet there will be if u can't turn jt by hand ) or Jus do the chain and hope ? ? ?

when my timing chain was done you have to take sump off as the timing cover gasket is part of the sump gasket too:confused:good luck with the camshaft guide/tension bolts these are terrible for corroding in place if the timing chain unlikely as would slacken not snap you might as well replace sprokets x3,x2 guides x2 chains x2 and tentioners if turning engine jams more likely a valve has broken thus preventing piston to do a full rotation

Think someone is about to realise this is not a DIY job unless you really know what your doing. Several special tools are needed also.

Well lads the timing chain looks ok iam going to take injectors out, then the fuel injection pump before i start taking anymore off, only thing that bothers me before i take pump out how, do i go about keeping the timing, when i cant crank engine to tdc.cheers pat

Take the injectors out try to turn it and if you get a fountain of coolant out of one of them your head gasket is crap or your block is cracked.

Leave the FIP alone for the moment, might be worth taking the starter motor off in case that has broken up and jammed the flywheel.

Surely if you have to take it apart then you would start from scratch crankshaft at tdc camshaft sprocket markins and the fip sprocket has marks to locate ??? You might of just had a sprocket slip on a lose chain due to tension as other suggestions starter out its a prosses of elimination
