I dont have much experience with landies little querks so hope someone can.help, I have a '94 300tdi. At about 50mph I start to hear a faint sound of what sound like a spitfire flying over. What confuses me is it gets very noticeably loud when turning relatively hard at speed. This noise has been getting louder and louder over the last 3 months. Ive recently changed the front wheel bearings and the rear bearings are fine.
The rear donut looks quite tired so ive bought a new one today but not fitted.

Any ideas much appreciated.

I had something similar in a 90, a rumbling at around 50mph, on mine it turned out to be worn out propshaft UJ's and i had to replace all of them which stopped the rumble. Give them a good grease on all 4 and then go for a drive and see if its any better.

If it's happening when you 'turn at speed' is it not the tyre fouling on something when the disco leans to one side. Check for areas of rubbing on body/plastics/chassis etc and obviously check the tyres too.

Be nice if you could record the noise and give us a listen (you tube).

will try and record, it gets worse when turning but is always there above 45mph , also noticed it gets worse when I accelerate hard in in 5th at about 50. Gonna swap wheels and donut tomorrow. If no better will record the sound

You do remember that you are driving a 17 yr old vehicle??????

I certainly hope I don't meet you on the same bit of road - you sound reckless and stupid to me.

By fast at speed I mean 60mph on the motorway on that big corner next to Birmingham. And hard in 5th. I did that as a tester to see what made the noise worse, and how hard can a disco accellerate in 5th. Im not reckless unlike most people my age and never speed. I dont see the point and when every penny I have goes to keep the car up together im not going to drive it stupidly and risk killing me or anybody. So Thanks.

For the others reading, changed the diff oil and wheels and made no difference, so will see about UJ and take up any slack I can find in wheel bearings.

They were your words, not mine.

And the fact that you continue to drive a vehicle that is obviously not running right further proves that you are lacking in awareness of the potential danger YOU might cause.

anything can be made to sound any way depending on the person editing and highlighting certain factors, just look at journalists. if i or others ive asked felt that this was a potentially dangerous i would not be driving it. but the fact that a land rover specialists told me it was fine to drive and is not going to reduce the saftey of this vehicle and that it past its MOT only a couple of weeks ago helps point me towards that i will not be causing any danger to other road users or myself and family. it is simply a neusence that i want to rectify.

could it just be tyre noise your not used to hearing in cars?

It would get louder when you turn at speed due to the tyre scrubbing on the tarmac

even though there was only small amount of play in the wheel bearings, i tightend them up and the noise has all but gone. didint know such a small amount of play could make that noise :S but oh well. at least its pretty much gone :) thanks for all your help :)

But I have been run into on my bike by a young twât driving an old car way too fast - and it hurt.

did think that that was a bit agressive even for landy zone! but i can understand why you felt like that now. recently lost a family friend who got hit by a women in a 4x4 who was texting. i tend to glare at every one of them now. hope your okay!
