That’s one of the things that will bugger the gearbox is putting the handbrake on, that’s a big no no. I destroyed a gearbox on a Landrover by doing a handbrake turn when I was 16. Off the stands now, I need someone who’s willing to be strapped underneath while I’m driving it

Didn't :eek:mean lock the handbrake ,just nudge it slowly to load it ,,As you said ,a pal of mine pulled a handbrake on on a old landy ,and broke the worm drive in the rear diff :(..

A worn clutch release bearing can certainly make a rattling noise, the one on my tractor sounds just like a tin full of marbles being shaken with light pressure on the clutch pedal.

I do hope it’s that, with a replacement LT95 now being £6000+ (3 years ago I got it for £340 on flea bay and he was hoping for £1200).

I will try that dude when I put it back up on stands.
yea the landy I broke was at the substation when i was 16 when I did my apprenticeship with the CEGB, I wasn’t allowed to drive on site anymore lol

Worm drive in a diff!?
Aye the bit that drives the crown gear ,not the planetary bit ether,,,He said it stripped the tooth bit that drives the crown gear ,,think it was an old 110 landy , every time he was parking hed pull the brake on be four he had stopped and it would a made a hell of a racket on over run ...:D,prob had the front shaft off as well...:D:D

Ah the diff pinion?

It's a bevel gear not a worm:)

I’d love to here from anyone if they’ve had a failed clutch release bearing, how it sounded and did it make changing gear hard.
I fancy drilling a hole in the bottom of the bell housing and putting a camera up inside to have a look, I could always plug it afterwards

Over the years with the family cars:
Peugeot 205. Release bearing wore through the plate fingers. Undrivable as clutch inoperative. Ripped the release bearing to bits.
Peugeot 306. Same event. Undrivable as above. Full lift recovery by RAC from South Coast to Leicester. Did a fair bit of damage to the release bearing operating shaft as well.
Reliant Scimitar. Worn out clutch. Accelerate & revs went up but road speed didn't. Drivable. That's a classic worn out clutch symptom.
Ford Granada Mk2. 5-speed box. Gearbox input shaft bearing failed. Drivable in 4th as that was straight through the box & no use of the layshaft. Any other gear (except reverse) lots of noise & undrivable - car literally shimmied down the road.
Peugeot 307. Noisy clutch release bearing. Drivable but fell apart when box removed so we just got away with that one.
Austin Metro. End sheared off shaft. No drive as the gear then falls off. Two occurrences as it's a known fault. I got quite good at swapping complete engine & gearboxes on these as a result.

You're going to have to start taking things apart & have a proper look.

Would you not see it if you take the starter motor off or would the camera be the wrong side of the flywheel? You may see debris on the starter though.;)

Wrong side.

Normally the release bearing makes a rattling noise as you drive along, long before it fails. Hand on the gearnob usually mutes it.

Sometimes there's a drain bung at the bottom of the bell housing or an inspection plate sonewhere on it. If not then I would guess there's no harm in making a hole at the bottom, just need a bung to seal it.

Mmmm not sure what to do next.
Just started to take the gearbox out of misses defender this weekend, that was a mission on the driveway. A say started as not finished, got interior stripped out and box off, fork was knackered, clutch not bad replaced everything anyway, got gearbox lined up to bolts and run out of steam.
Oil poured out when took rear diff off so that’s new handbrake assembly, joy
I know what I’ll be doing next weekend, Landrover’s certainly are needy.
