Do those seals also come with a plastic 'sleeve' to help get the seal over the lip of the flange?
Yeah it did actually went on no problem gave it a good check once in place as I remembered from your engine rebuild thread you'd had a few issues.

How's your engine now did you get all the issues sorted with oil in intercooler pipes?

The turbo recon company swapped it out out for me. This one is passing a lot less oil. It's much more responsive too. I put a boost gauge in when I was suspicious of the other one, the needle responds much more rapidly now. The old one didn't spin very easily, when you spun the blades with your finger it was 'sticky'. The new one spun much more freely. She's pulling very well, is quiet and smooth compared to before the rebuild. The engine still smokes for a few minutes from cold, but it seems to be using less and less oil each week. So, I'm going to see how it goes for another two or three thousand miles, perhaps more cos the winter will kick in. I'm hoping it's 'running in'. If it's still smoking then I'll have to think about re-honing the bores as James Martin suggested. If I end up doing that it'll have to wait until next spring when the weather warms up as I've just the drive to work on and it's gets canny cold up here. :D

hi ive recently done that work to mine with a new flywheel housing gasget put the seal on dry as if you even put on a slight bit of oil it will leak , as for the gearbox it not too bad ive just had mine done by ascroft 650 quid all in :)

They're over for me anorl. When doing the Landy rebuild I did try and last as long as I could, but once it got too cold I just wrapped the Landy up in a tarp for the winter and waited for spring.
Your workshop has got a lot of us envious. Crackin space that. :D
The turbo recon company have been superb throughout, right from the first call I made as an enquiry. They were recommended by another LZ member and it's proved a good recommendation.

Yeah that's what I thought TBH was thinking of changing the transfer box to a Discovery one anyways. Best get shopping for a lt77 gearbox tomorrow. I take it Ashcroft are the best bet? Or can anyone recommend another gearbox supply/refurb company?
 
hi ashcroft are ok but my mate said synchro gearboxes are v good bit dearer and a long waiting list .i waited 3 weeks for mine as i wanted to keep the box they refurbed mine and i fitted a v8 disco transfer box

I was on synchro's website today they have a banner at top stating 10weeks!! :eek::eek::eek: I emailed them, Ashcroft, Aztech Engineering, 4x4 gearboxes etc also emailed a few transmission rebuild specialist near me but no body has gotten back to me yet :cool: must not be hungry enough!!! My dad phoned an old Mechanic he know at Liz Toll he gave us a number to phone I'll try that tomorrow if the boss is out the office. If I could get an Lt230 input gear with new bearings fitted then I'd sort transfer box myself just not got access to a press and mandrels
 
The local gearbox guy A.J Kane Gearbox Repairs has quoted me £540 inc Vat to refurbish the main gearbox If i drop it off Friday I can get it back Middle/end next week. So think I'm going give it to him to do he comes highly recommended and I'll save quite a bit when you take into account the exchange surcharge etc.

The Serial number on my gearbox is a bit strange it starts with a H then just four numbers H6**6. The area where it's stamped looks to have been ground then this number stamped into it.

Could it be that it's been rebuilt once before?

yes, reconditioners often change the number,sometimes as its just policy and others as case is used in a rebuild of a different prefix box
 
Main gearbox is now with a local rebuilder he does a lot of Land Rover gearboxes and was recommended by a Landy mechanic. Yesterday I took the input gear out of the Transfer box and gave the internals a inspection. I'm thinking replace the input gear and associated bearings and all the seals hopefully that's all it will need.

Any today my Shock absorbers finally arrived so got them fitted along with the Engine and steering box.

Got the wiring loom threaded through the chassis it's a brand new loom from Autosparks not very impressed with it as the Large rubber grommet where loom comes out off chassis is missing :( I phoned them yesterday after much arguing they are sending a grommet feck knows how I'm supposed to fit it with all the connectors :mad:

I've got isolation washers fitted to the underside of the top mount I wouldn't be able to get another on the topside. I've had same set up on old chassis for three years and was fine.
 
Nothing much to report after the weekend. I got the transfer box rebuilt with new cross drilled gear but couldn't get it fitted as the local gearbox expert never had my main gearbox ready. In fact i phoned him yesterday to check if it will be ready middle this week like he promised last week only for him to say no in fact he hadn't even looked at it :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I've managed to source a rebuilt gearbox from David Beaumont 4x4 http://www.4x4gearboxes.co.uk/ reasonable price and will drop it off on Thursday :D:D:D. So hopefully get some progress this weekend then there won't be much as I'll be away working 7 days a week with only 1 day off a fortnight :eek: till end October.
 
Time for an update I had a weekend off a fortnight ago and fitted gearbox unfortunately when fitting transfer box I didn't notice that both the gearbox and transfer box had a solid dowel the end result was this

As you can see I Fubar'd the extension case of my new gearbox. I almost cried real tears :( Luckily I managed to source a secondhand extension case.
 
I got the replacement extension case fitted on Friday along with the transfer box(only one solid dowel this time). Not got any pics of it fitted. I actually got quite a bit done this weekend fitted new radiator and Revotec electric fan,full size Alisport Intercooler,front and rear prop shafts,brake calipers and pads all brake and clutch pipes connected,Stainless Steel exhaust all fitted. My rear tub has some corrosion around the seat belt mounts and where it bolts to Chassis so fitted YRM repair panels and a YRM bulkhead removal bar. Quite chuffed with what I've achieved this weekend back to work tomorrow for a rest lol here's the pics.
