All cars, no matter what the badge say's on it's arse, are designed with a 10 year lifespan. When Tarquin buys a new Range Rover it's covered by a 3 year warranty so, he drives it a lot and racks up 90 to 100,000 miles then chops it in for another new one because Daddies Company is paying
Along comes second owner, kids grown up and fled the nest, more disposable income to spend, fancies a Range Rover instead of a new Focus. Chances are he will get 3 years of reliable motoring with the odd bill for tyres, pads, etc. After 3 years he fancies a change so chops it in for a new Hyundi and then brags down the pub how he can get 56 mpg, but deep down knows he's dropped a bollock.( I know someone who did just that ).
Along comes owner 3. He is either like us who has a passion for Land Rover and cares for and maintains his beloved machine, or, he is Jack the Lad who wants to look like a Gangster and blings it up. Once he realises how expensive these vehicles can be to maintain correctly, he prefers to buy more drugs rather than spend it on the car so it deteriates and ends up with a long list of things that don't work no more.
Owner four takes a gamble and spends lots of money putting it right and moaning about it on forums. Not many people post to say how reliable there cars are. Land rovers are no worse than any other prestige vehicle.
All of the above is a generalisation and not ment to offend anyone. :)

now you mention it,my2.5td pajero just went on and on and on with just oil and filters.boring isn't it?

My 2.5 tad shogun sport did not.
Common fault,
Engines going bang at 60k
Main pulley bearings collapsing
Brake calliper s seizing

They are a good car! But it's like comparing a roman chariot to a rolls Royce .

They are bone shakers, that drink fuel
 
Only time will tell I remember what they said about the Triumph stag overheater But there still going strong

Many with liner slipping rover V8's fitted and the rest for looking at not driving.
Shame about the Stag motor, it had the potential to be good. Dolomite Sprint engine was good and way ahead of it's time IMO:)

I had one not v8 you could get the water ways enlarged that improved things , had a shock when the rear diff gave up its collapsible. And the rear wheels were pointing inwards
 
Well, I now have a 2003 TD6. Bought it in January this year (previously had 1999 P38 4.0 SE V8, Rebuilt engine by owner). My TD6 has had a few bits replaced ie auxiliary fuel pump, front and rear pads and sensors, MID Ribbon replaced and now the ****e GM 540 transmission is being rebuilt (1650+ VAT) after the cooler leaked and I took the sump pan off to check it's condition to see the dreaded silver sludge. I get 27Mpg + from it, smoother ride as it has independent suspension all round and it is a totally improved beast over the P38 minus the shameful tip-tronic transmission. I am looking at TD tuning at the moment as it needs a little more power and it has a real passion to hang in third gear. So all in all still love it but a pity that BMW were to greedy to stick with ZF fort the trans. Looking forward to the TDV8 when my piiggy bank (wife ) allows it. Toodle pip for now.

not the dolly sprint of my memory data,head gaskets x3,main bearings x2,block x1 and the carbs were a bastid to keep in balance:crazy_driver:was only 18 at the time and soon changed for an rs2000 much much better
 
For the gearbox and front end, the only L322 worth getting is 2006 onwards.
The original L322 looks like Chuckie from Rugrats.

I bought my P38 diesel 21/2 years ago with 105000 on the clock and now it has 155000 on it.I have used it for 2 long trips and also laid it up for 1 year.
I have had a few problems with it but it has never let me down apart from the time a gearbox oil cooler pipe burst and oiled the road and the tow truck service would not send a tow truck untill they had looked at it to see if they could repair it and i they said they could not as they didnt have the parts but i promptly gave them a new hose as i was on the way to have it fitted but they declined doing the job and made me wait another hour for the tilt tray but they could have towed me with the pick up as i was only 1 mile from where i had to go I was not happy.
Overall im very happy with the rangie but it does have it quirks i keep it serviced regulary and replace anything that looks like it could give problems.
 
I've had my RR for almost 1 years (29th October 2011 is when I signed the dotted line). In that time I've had to replace 6 glow plugs, the alternator, head light cluster and steering rod. Plus general servicing. With the exception of the headlight cluster which broke because I hit a pheasant at some miles per hour, they are all wear and tear items. Things I'd expect to replace at 179k on any vehicle. When you consider they were all original parts I am surprised they lasted that long anyway.
 
I've had mine for 3.5 years. Replaced airsprings when I got it and a window regulator and leak off pipes, since then I've overhauled the valve block, and replaced the air dryer, drag link and track rod and rear panhard rod and battery, just done the "O" rings. Still to do, headlining and gearbox. It's never let me down although it has dropped me to the bump stops twice. Otherwise it's regular servicing and fixing water leaks. It's just the constant stream of niggly problems.

Forgot, engine oil cooler pipes and oil cooler and the aircon condensor replaced and a height sensor. Just under 90K when I bought it, 110K now.

I wouldn't have learnt half the stuff about range rovers if mine didn't break so much lol

My P38 Diesel with 92,000 miles and full service history has been so reliable in the last 12 months of ownership other than,
Gearbox oil cooler pipes,
Gearbox oil cooler,
Water Pump,
Thermostat,
Recon Alternator,
Disc's & pads,
Brake pipes,
Air flow meter,
Centre and rear back box,
In tank fuel pump,
Other than that is just been general servicing!!!!

Can't help loving it though.

blown o rings on gearbox cooler lines50p +£40 for oil ,full setof tyres£500 ,full set of brake pads and 2 front caliper overhaul kits£150,new rear discs£60 ,abs sensor£30, 1 hub lower bush£20+£100 labour , and will need a new eas compressor at some point for about £300. and have had couple of services at dealers for about £250 a time
I also have my own allcomms which was £180 and has paid for itself about 3 times over resetting stuff
not that bad really for a car I love driving

I know though, through what I've seen and read about LandRovers that they need constant care and attention....
Still, any and all repairs - maintenance - screaming - tearing hair out... will be nothing compared to maintaining my wife!! LOL

Here's to many years (hopefully) of Rangie fun!!

the TD6's seem to run well, ie mines on 147K now, and you have got a high miler too. but mine has done motorway mileage most of its life so hopefully that has taken alot of stress of gearchanges etc.. from the gearbox. :eek:

still going strong !

and the td6 engine goes well once mapped :D
