just gone out to my car and unlocked it as I always do with the beeper, but the back door refuses to open I can hear the mechanism unlocking or at least sounding like it is but it won't open.
I have tried a search on this but couldn't find anything.

any ideas??????????????

Whoops try another search then as there's lots of threads on this subject.

same problem just a few threads below this on the same subject...but climb inside and see if it opens from inside using the handle, if it does order a new locking solinoid. when starting to fail, they seem to lock ok, but not unlock, give it some lub, that shoul see it going again for a few days

I had a similar problem. Got the door opened by going inside the car, then peeled of the door lining, and there was a wee hook thing in the mechanism, unhooked. Hooked it back on and it's been fine for 2 years now.

Assuming you are talking about tailgate door, ive had same thing thing...mechanism gets clogged up with c**p and spray. If you point a hose up behing the door handle and give it a good wash you'll see the muck come out, give a good spray around the mechanism with WD40 or similar and it should open. Hope this helps...before you strip the door internals :)

^^^^

What he said. You can pop out the LR badge on the handle cover and give the hinges and springs a good squirt with WD40 or the like.

Hi Whitey, can I just ask are we talking about a passenger rear side door, or the back door which gives access to the boot?

Assuming we are talking the boot door, you can hear the lock doing something but when you try to open the door by pushing the latch up, what happens?

My 1999 Disco 2 often has this problem. So I open rear side door get in lean over and open the rear door seems ok for a few months.

The D2 has two servos (actuators) in the lock, it's well known that the unlocking one can fail, if it does the quickest way to resolve the issue is replace the lock. :(

Mine did just the same the other week. Ended up stripping the lock out and fitting a replacement as suggested in a number of threads. Seems the small motor (one of 2) fails.
Easy to do but costs Almost £90 for the part.
The noise you can hear is probably the super locking motor.
