i'm working on it! Things are going slowly at the moment, this time of year is always hard being self-employed in my industry!

September 2011 - My Annus Horribilis

During the first staff meeting of the academic year, the Headteacher discussed staff absence and used the phrase "if you are late to school, let's say if your car breaks down or your plumbing breaks, I would expect you to come and see me out of courtesy".

Damn and blast!!

The same evening, it wouldn't start - right in the middle of my daughter's nursery car park. The nice AA man (who arrived within 12 minutes because my then three year old was in the car) said it was the starter. Off it went to the garage.

A new starter was fitted and as soon as I picked it up there was a stutter at low rpm. Turned round and went back to the garage, nothing obvious was found so we decided to "suck it and see" over the next few day. A few days later, all seemed well and then it failed to start again!!

A different nice AA man came out and in spite of the new starter, he diagnosed the starter! I seem to remember the AA man saying I could only get recovered to a "local" garage and my garage is a tad further away. My mechanic came out removed the starter, took it back to the garage, tested, replaced, returned and fitted it. Happy days!

Then the stutter came back! Back into the garage where it stayed for two months. We tried everything. Hoses, filters, you name it. The ECU kept throwing up the throttle position sensor/throttle potentiometer as the problem. This was the catch - the price. I spent hours and effing hours searching the net and the cheapest I could find was £800 from Australia.:eek::eek:

Several weeks later, the potentiometer was fitted it seemed fine. Then the alternator went.

Several weeks later, the alternator was fitted it seemed fine. Then the head gasket went.

Seven miles later, the head gasket was fitted it seemed fine. Then the head gasket went again.

During the last few weeks, that damn stutter kept cropping up!!!

I'd forked out a decent amount of dosh and the wife was really, really hacked off.

Where next?

I think this is a photo of the old throttle potentiometer (STC 1734) judging by the grubby connector.

Well, where to next?

Redo the head gasket and risk the same again? Had the block cracked?

Replace the block?

Rebuild the whole engine?

Replace with a used 300Tdi?

Replace with a new 300Tdi?

Fortunately, I have a very understanding wife who has a good job and she bought me a 2.8 TGV fitted by M&D Engineering of Sleaford, Lincolnshire.

Here's some info......

Displacement 2.785 litres
Max power 135 bhp @ 3800 rpm (TD5 135 bhp - Standard 111 bhp)
Max torque 277 lb ft @ 1400 rpm (TD5 221 lb ft - Standard 195 bhp)
Aspiration Variable Geometry Turbo

Land Rover conversions - M&D Engineering

http://www.mdengineering.co.uk/pdf/15~NEW%20ENGINES%20WITH%20KITS.pdf

The good points are…..

  • Zero miles
  • Very smooth
  • Incredible torque - 277 lbf ft
  • More power – as much as a TD5
  • Mechanical/manual fuel pump thereby eliminating the need for a throttle potentiometer and associated stutter
  • Uses LR filters, etc.
The bad points are…..

  • The cost including losing a new starter, new alternator and the cost of the HG repair when they kept the old 300Tdi
  • Silly problems with turbo hoses
  • Same sh177y mpg as the old 300Tdi
  • Lost use the ECU and the JE Engineering Stage 2 Tune
  • Really needs a bigger torque converter to make best use of the power/torque.

I do fancy the conversion but too much electronics for my liking.

What electronics? :confused::confused:

My ECU is now redundant (engine wise) and I've got several disconnected plugs in the engine bay.

There's certainly less electronics than a EDC 300 Tdi and the Tdi can't be much different to your 200Tdi. I've never had a 200 Tdi so like most things, I'm not speaking from a position of knowledge.:eek:

I imagined that like the 300 there would be a lot of engine electronics.

My 200 was purchased specifically because the only gubings it has on it is the immobiliser.

The first 300's were the same. Mine only has an immobiliser. No fancy electronics to go wrong.

Lucky bloke,does she cook aswell?

Yep. :D

She's spent years in the hospitality business, bar staff, waitress, commis chef, sous chef, head chef, deputy hotel manager and hotel manager across the south of England.

In her time, she's waited on quite a few stars, Princess Dianna, Alice Cooper, Edward Fox and Jimmy Saville!!! Like the rest of the country, she though Saville was creepy even before it all became public.

And before anybody asks if she was one of his conquests, the answer is no. She's had lots of experience of kicking drunks out of bars - she's like cheap toilet paper: She takes no **** off anyone!!

I stand corrected.....:D

I think you can make them as complex or as simple as you like.

I mean, you don't even need a battery to run a Tdi so it is possible.

It is the ultimate ultimate solution to be honest!

Would be awesome to drive one... (Nudge nudge wink wink) :p
