What a thread! Been reading it through the past few days. Amazing detail on the truck, almost makes me want to get to work on my td5 but sadly I don't have the cahonies for that:( Great work keep it up!!

MOT passed on Thursday = on step forward.

Friday; ABS light on, wheel wobble at M way speed, rumble when cornering, rumble when slowing down, steering wobble when braking and bumping on OSF = six steps back. :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I've nipped out tonight, jacked it and the OSF wheel is wobbling like a bitch. The wheel is bolted securely to the spacer, the spacer is bolted securely to the disc (sounds like a song) but the disc appears to be floating. I've grabbed a video inside the wheel and you can see the disc moving back and forth between the pads as I rock the wheel.

Now I don't do greasy bits so it the problem the bearing, the CV?

Big question, am I safe travelling seven miles to my garage?

 
Sounds like one or both of your wheel bearings has collapsed. That's a lot of play so I wouldn't drive it personally, I'd say that's probably beyond tightening it up too. :(
 
With all the stuff you have done on this car buddy a bearing is so easy. If never done b4 1 hour is all that you need to sort it no problems. Just buy bearing kit. Tub of grease and the big box nut spanner. All that will be 25 quid max no real special tools needed. Just rag hammer and drifts. If u really don't fancy it yourself don't drive it call Rac or the damage can be much worse than u think.

You need, in order of appearance:

Large flatblade screwdriver for plastic cap
Circlip pliers for, urm, circlip
17mm socket for flange bolts
Hammer to crack off flange
Hammer and large flatblade screwdriver to open up lock washer
52mm socket+breaker bar/box spanner and suitable driver for big nuts
13mm bihex socket for caliper
17mm socket for upper swivel pin bolts (be quick and put one back in again!)
Mallet to remove hub from stub axle
Large lever/screwdriver to remove hub seal
Large hammer and small cold chisel to drive bearing races out
Angle grinder/hacksaw to cut slot in old bearing race
Large hammer and large bolt/round drift to drive new races into hub
Pot of grease to pack bearings
Pot of grease to add more grease
Then add grease
FTC4785 hub seal, fit to depth 4mm using outer bearing race as drift with hammer
Hands to refit hub
Hand to hand tighten first nut
Hammer to beat lock washer flat
Hand to refit lock washer
52mm socket to lock second nut tight
Hammer and large flatblade to beat lock washer onto opposing nut flats
17mm socket to remove 1 top swivel pin bolt
Fast hands to fit caliper and retaining bolts
Fast hands to refit 2 top swivel pin bolts
17mm socket to tighten top swivel pin bolts
13mm socket to tighten caliper bolts
Hands to fit and 17mm socket to tighten flange bolts
Circlip pliers to fit, urm, circlip
Hand to fit plastic cap
Hand to drink celebratory beer
Female to be impressed over your manly skill and to provide sexual favours due to your exemplory manly skill

Wheel bearing is real easy mate, just basic tools and about an hour.. jobs a gooden!

I completely overhauled the brakes/bearings and brake lines on someones disco last week, along with the amount of times I've had hubs off/axles apart on mine I can do wheel bearings with me eyes shut now!

Thanks for the kind offer. SWMBO's driving this which is appreciated as my Man Flu is getting the better of me. I'm even debating having a day off tomorrow which is unheard of!!
