Hello all,

I managed to sort the core plug problem, and all the welding and other stuff for the MOT, but she's still failed on the brakes...

There aren't any snail cam adjusters anywhere in the UK it seems, and as the old ones haven't been moved since the damned thing was built in '83 they are not willing to come off so I'll have to hope that I can manage as they are...so...

I decided to change the remaining three wheel cylinders anyway, but the brake-pipe ends are as solid as the adjusters and will need cutting off, so new brake pipe is needed, and here's the question...are the flares on Landy brake pipes standard flares? If possible I want to avoid buying a flare kit. I do have a refrigeration engineers flare kit (old fridge mender me) but I have no idea if the flare is standard or not.

The flare for the female brake pipe end is probably just a standard 45deg flare, but the flare for the male end is the one that's worrying me. Is this a standard flare?

Any help would be much appreciated as ever...

Just incase anybody has any ideas here's the failure breakdown:

001 front brake application uneven
002 Nearside front brake grabbing severely (why would it grab? There are new shoes front and back by the way)
003 Nearside rear brake binding (I've figured this one out...wheel cyl sticking and I'll replace it tomorrow)
004 Brake pedal creeps down when held under pressure (I don't understand this one at all!!)
005 Brake pedal spongy (air? all the above causing it?)

I'll replace all the wheel cylinders, brake pipes and ends, but I can't budge the adjusters at all..one is now rounded over as a result of trying...WD'd it, heated it, WDd again but no luck...the others will be the same no doubt.

A bl**dy white van is looking more and more appealing...help!!

Hi feller get the adjusters from craddocks, are the brake springs fitted corectly common cause of brake bind, uneven brake pressure warped drum? brake pedal fade more than likely be master cylnder, any fluid in the floor well???had the wrong drums on my car took ages to sus out had large stud axels and someone had put small stud drums on and drilled out the stud holes, but the drums were slightly skinnier, causung the shoes to jam the drums. series brakes are a nightmare...keep at em...good luck...;)

Thanks for the replies.

I've got a flare kit coming in the morning from a friend. I'd have ordered one from screwfix, or for that matter bought one anywhere had I needed to, but as I use the Landy every day speed is more important at the moment. The MOT station have sat on the Landy since Friday - busy apparently - and only condescended to let me know it had failed after I drove them mad calling.

So tomorrow in 70mph wind and rain I'll be stripping and re-building the lot. What a lovely day it'll be!

The creeping down bit might be air ,but also might the seals in your master cylinder...Fluid travelling past them....:(

My thoughts on your problems.

1. Get a pipe flare kit
2. Pads / Crads for adjusters.
3. Replace all the springs on all wheels
The whole system is inter connected and if one set of springs is stronger than another
then it will force fluid towards the weaker spring and you get odd binding like symptoms.
4. Check set up of master cylinder (I would replace)
5. Ezbled kits are ok
6. Use g- clamps to isolate wheels and check / adjust each one at a time.
Careful with the clamps as you can cut , kink and generally damage old pips (Best get some new one as well)
5. If in doubt get new bits.

Just some things to think about if when ordering new bits.

1000Kg's
No crumple zones
Drums all round
No servo
all stopped with 1950's technology

to quote Ormus
dont **** about wif brakes. it aint worth it mate

Hi

Paddocks do a whole brake kit, new cylinderss, springs, shoes and pipes. not sure what else is in them.

Thanks for the new responses. All are welcome.

I had already bought a full brake kit from Paddocks, the problem is that they have NO new adjusters whatsoever. And apparently nobody else does either. At least none of the thirty odd places I called. Paddocks said, "they were supposed to be in in December. And then January. Now? Well there might be some on a boat that might be due in soon. Dunno really. Your guess is as good as mine." !!!

Anyway...one of the two adjusters on the offside had a cracked cam on it which meant I couldn't "nip up" the forward shoe. So...two hours later and I've made a new cam! It wasn't exactly a walk in the park but it wasn't brain surgery either. I'll let you know how it works tomorrow.

BTW...the master cylinder is fine. No leaks etc. and everything else seems okay. So fingers crossed again!

cheers all

Andy
