I have noticed a "tappet-y" noise today when firing the old gal up and going on a shortish run.
Noticeable on gentle acceleration (not caning it) as a defined clack-clack from the engine bay.
Went only a mile or two and parked up. Came out and went back home and...... magically, the noise was gone.
Lazy lifter? Needs more miles and harder running I think. I believe it gets gummed-up as I only do a few (8) hundred miles a year nowadays.

Good quality oil?

TBH, @Datatek, I have no idea. It's clean and clear, and oily. But might be rubbish.
I have done <1500 miles since I bought the car last July. I could change the oil "just because" I suppose.
Maybe the stealer put crap in there, its hard to tell.

Wammers would not agree, but I think good quality synthetic of the recommended grade pays dividends.

I thought these engines needed the love of a high Zinc "Old School" oil?

High zinc for the flat tappet cams used in the Rover V8.

Remember its a 1960s engine with mid 90s bosch fuel injection slapped on top!

Some people use high zinc 20w50 in 'em!

Can I recommend pennrite hpr 10/50. During the hot weather it has held up really well. Hot weather can cook cheap oil in v8s .it's a bit thicker when warm but still 10 weight for starting . It's also fully synthetic so tends to retain it's viscosity under stress. High zinc for the cam loves to. Last time I made this recommendation loads people came out of the woodwork and said I run mine on all sorts of cheap rubbish. These vehicles are expensive to rebuild and have very specific needs for oil.

Thanks for this, I was looking for the named brand but could not remember it. :)

I used Magnatec in my 4.6, sadly no longer have it but. even low mileage I would change it annually.
