Hi All,

My 2001 4.6 HSE Range rover is running like a bag of spanners at high speed (about 70ish) and every now and again seems to clear and shoot of and run nice (obviously i then slow to the legal limit). the problem keeps coming back.

I have been told that the Air Mass is clogged and I should run it in sports mode for about 500 miles which will help clear the problem, is this true? or is there another way to get it cleaned.

Does the running problems indicate a clogged Air mass thing?

Any help please. I cann't get a manual for the car as I use a Mac and have problems downloading one.

Air Mass? Are we talking about an air filter? When is the last time you had regular maintenance done on your vehicle?

The car has just had a major service and the Auto gearbox clutches changed along with the positional indicator.

there has recently been a post by someone on cleaning the air mass meter shearch is your friend on here (think the post was by redranger?)

Switching to sports mode or any other driving trick will have no effect on the cleanliness or otherwise of the MAF (Mass AirFlow) sensor.

The air measurement is made by a couple of hot wires contained on a chamber outside the main "air duct" down the middle. You should see a couple of holes machined into the front and back of the casing where the air is bled off through the hot-wire measuring section. That is the only bit that would need cleaning as the rest can't affect the measurement.

To clean it I would suggest that a flush through with injector cleaner followed by a flush through in petrol might help, but I don't understand how a MAF sensor would get "dirty" as they only pass air, and that air has already been through the air cleaner?

Thanks for the advice I shall try and locate the mass flow meter and clean it.
There are so may pipes and wires can you tell me what does it look like and is it very fragile?

Thanks, I have found it and it looks slightly different, mine is a 2001 4.6 HSE.

is there a quick way of checking it, I took it out and gave it a clean, although it was not very dirty, a little dusty.

It's not really a user-servicable/user-testable part. Best bet is to get the OBD fault codes flushed out of the ECU to see if any MAF faults have been flagged.

To clean the MAF get some carburettor cleaner, spray it down the hole in the centre of the maf, turn it upside down and shake out the excess. Repeat and then let it dry for 1/2 hour refit it and youre done. Dont be scared to give it a good dosing of carb cleaner. Also what you can try is to remove the electrical plug and clean it with some electrical contact cleaner, as this can sometimes play up giving an itermittent fault.
