Hard acceleration:D
Blue bell Hill Maidstone 3rd gear 30 mph at best, it would do 70 down the same hill, but engine had no guts at all, gawd knows what it was like with a load or a trailer on!
I think it was introduced as an alternative to the petrol engines, based on the same block.

And those petrol engines were introduced as an improvement on the 1600 and 1800 side valves, which were apparently incredibly gutless.

Did the crank not have more bearings on the diesel and was stamped...or was it the other way round...but using the sACme block...

I don't think it had more bearings at first. But I could easily be wrong, might remember in the morning.
It was stamped, but I think that might have been because it had a different throw, to increase compression ratio.
Three bearing crank continued on 2 1/4 engines for a long time, up until the mid seventies, I think.
Doesn't seem to be too much of a problem on petrols, although obviously five bearing is better.

Yes. Quite envious, I wouldn't mind taking that apart on a warm day.
Hardly been above freezing here all day, and the fog never lifted. :(

Likewise.... We had sunshine most of the day but working on the shoreside was bitterly cold.
Then when I get home its nearly 30 degrees inside

Sorry guys about the weather...it's rained a bit in the last week...was a bit damp today so had to put a shirt on over my t-shirt...

On a different note...got 101 insured on UK plate...sorted misfire...dud new champion plug FFS...public hol tomorrow so going for a run as GNR to busy checking covid travel restrictions between councils...I know I'm going to get stopped by the pricks trying to find something to fine me for...but heho will let you know...lol

It's the postage that can be a problem here to Portugal if using ebay some sellers do others not and if they use RM can make it worse...thanks for reply...Rob..
I've just had a look on Paddocks website and they charge £15 for a 30kg parcel which doesn't seem too bad. They also say "...We often send large orders to Europe. This is not calculated per parcel. If you are placing a large order consisting of many items, please contact us for the very best rates..."

Thanks for that I have used them before...but found after ordering online had to phone to chase them up to have to go through the whole order again...calls from Portugal are not cheap!!...and if just one part is missing it's still 15 quid postage as it's up to 30kg...and if it's the wrong part sent,to return from here is around double that...

Fair point

I'd order everything, when you weigh up the parts cost vs the shipping in bulk it makes more sense to get everything in the box, if you don't need it give to the customer (on the bill..), it if doesn't fit put it on e-bay for Portugal. I now order double on all gaskets, small parts and oil seals, An oil seal can be £1 and it gets nicked fitting it and the next one is £1 plus £6 post. Its easy to get fixated on parts that cost pennies when its costing £10/hr just looking at the website. The most important question is where are the price breaks on the shipping weight.

Why not order all the bits, get them sent to a uk address, get the addressee to confirm/double check all parts are there, then get the lot shipped out to you?

2.0 diesel was three bearings
Wet liner, block had small tell tales to show if liner seals were leaking, which they always do!
21.5 to 1 comp ratio
Iirc 5 piston rings per piston
Tdi starter motor made the world of difference in cold weather
Copper head gasket which is carp, std 2.25 composite head gasket fits and means no oil leaks

The 2.0 diesel also has a weird bellows theremostat which is quiet hard to get hold of and bloody dear, be aware there are two length stats and only one will fit

Pic of copper and compo gasket
