I'm doing some interior upgrades, and I want to fit a 52mm tacho into my truck. It has a Disco 200Tdi engine.

Seem to get conflicting info here. Am I right that any 52mm diesel tacho should work and it just does onto the "w" connection on the alternator? Does it actually have to be a diesel specific tacho if it's just an alternator feed?

Anyone does this...looking for something tasteful but cheap.

Anything which will measure the half wave output on the "W" terminal will do you, :) but.... look at decent quality, like Durite - I'd avoid the cheapo stuff, and, I am sure, you can guess why :rolleyes: - the "diesel" specific ones have a lower RPM full scale deflection - 4K on a durite one I have, rather than 6K on a "petrol" version - but as its on a low revving petrol engine (!) - you pays your money ...... :)
 
Im not really sure what use one would be on a 200tdi due to the quality of sound deadening giving you a pretty good idea what the engine is up to.
 
Cheers guys. TBH it's more of a styling thing...I'm redoing my interior at the mo. The right hand clock aperture on the dash is currently a Durite voltmeter, but it's very bright at night, and also sticks out of the dash unlike the other clocks. I want something fairly flush fitting ideally.

The Durite voltmeter will end up down on the centre panel a bit more out of the way.

Out of interest, what is the "red line" on a 200Tdi (not that I ever go there!)
 
Rev limiter is 4600 for the 300 according to the book so would expect the 200 to be similar
If that's true then my big wheeled disco transfer box'ed 110 'should' get to 146mph? It only does 103 !! Although, in fairness, the 17 mile flat straight bit of the M6 wasn't long enough I suspect.
I've got some cheap chinky eBay gauges in mine and they are surprisingly very accurate and still going 10 yrs on except for the voltmeter which died last year.The voltmeter is the odd one out far left. Got a genuine time clock in the binnacle spare hole.

Probably find that your 'lost' 43mph will be down to aerodynamic drag as you probably haven't streamlined your door handles! :(:D
 
Thanks for the help people. Can someone confirm that this is a Disco alternator and has the required "W" terminal? There's a little black box on the right with a spare connection doing nothing at the moment...be nice if that was it...

The max rpm with no load is different to when its under load and the governor starts to cut in, 4000rpm rings a bell?
If you google it there loads of info out there and not the landrover info you want the peugeot boys as they do mad things to their pumps, serious rpms.

Cheers but the last thing I want to do is start revving the nuts off my beloved 200Tdi, it's a Land Rover after all. I have a car with a gorgeous sounding flat 6 in it that ticks that box for me instead :). I just wanted to know what the max revs were so I could get a rev counter with the appropriate scale. If it tops out at 4000, 4000 is fine.

As an aside, I notice some of the eBay counters specifically say "not for Land Rovers". Is this disclaimer there to stop people trying to fit them to a 1950s SII diesel or similar and expecting it to work...and in practice it will be fine on what is, as far as the rev counter is aware, a 1990s Discovery?
 
That looks like a 200tdi disco alternator all right - and it's the w terminal. There's a W cast into the casing beside it. The black box is a suppressor.
 
After doing some research, I bought this one......
These are programmable and has the same numbering style like the speedo. The full scale being 4k rpm, will discourage you from reving more than that as opposed to a 6k and the 4k will be more accurate to read.

I am picky, but accepted the fact that the needle is red as opposed to white.

I reckon with a 200tdi you could not destroy one in good nick if you tried.

Just wondering are the pulley sizes the same on the def/disco engines and what are the crank to pulley ratio on each engine version? just thinking if you dont know the tach will tell lies.

Yer problem is all those cables. Excess weight that is.
