Diesel. It keeps up with traffic well enough. They can be a bit frustrating on long climbs. Clatter a bit when cold but so do most diesels, and it's only for a couple of minutes.

They must have been totally knackered then. How fast do you want to drive on todays crowded roads?

Really? I personally find 174 BHP in a near 3 ton truck to not be completely frustrating at times. I mean, sure, my 4.0 P38 is supposedly 182 BHP and it is pretty dire. My old 4.6 THOR was just about okay most of the time.

I did drive a few L322's before deciding to wait a while and get another P38 first while I save for a 4.2SC (or a TDV8), but I found the 4.4 V8 to be just about fast enough to be comfortable.

That being said, I do like a relatively rapid car. Not stupid fast, but my 258 BHP 530d is just about acceptable in performance.

I doubt very much I would be happy enough with a 2.5 diesel P38. It would have to be mapped for a start, but probably a few other choice upgrades to try to squeeze that little bit more out of it. Although I am a fan of the thought of running SVO occasionally, as I did with my old Polo.

My lad has a TD V8 Sport and there is nothing pedestrian about that. I have a chipped 2.5 P38 auto which is quick enough for anybody. If you want to drive around like a bloody idiot buy yourself a Porsche.

No, there is nothing pedestrian about the TDV8, that was my point, they have the same power as the 4.4 V8, so are quick enough. And is the reason I decided to get into another P38 just now while I save for one, rather than "settle" for an early 4.4 L322.

I'm sure the 2.5 TDI, when chipped, is quick enough for most. But not for me. It may be as quick as my old 4.6 at best, but I suspect closer to my current 4.0, both of which are a bit, well, meh.

You misunderstand me though. I have no intention of driving about like an idiot. But I do drive a lot of back roads and dual carriageways, where the ability to overtake safely is a huge bonus, or the ability to accelerate quickly onto the DC is also worthwhile.

Just because I like to drive a quick-ish car doesn't mean I have to drive like a hooligan. My personal feeling is that around the 250 BHP mark is probably the minimum where I would feel an almost 3 ton truck isn't actually slow.

A P38 does not weigh 3 tonnes, 2.25 and the diesel is perfectly adequate, indeed quick compared to my other 4 x 4's. If I want to race about, I use my MR2

Sounds like you are one of those people who can't stand to have anyone in front of them. There are a lot of you about. Providing people are making reasonable progress the speed limit is a maximum not to exceed not something that must be attained at all times. :D

That'll teach me to read the internet. Sure I read it was 2780 Kg somewhere recently. Oh well.

Still, my point remains that, for me at least, the petrol feels slow enough. To me. Which is mostly the reason I didn't even entertain the idea of a diesel. Even when looking at the early L322's (couldn't afford a TDV8 at the time).

I really don't get why driving a car that feels fast enough appears to equate to racing it about everywhere though. This is simply not the case.

People are obsessed with power, I make better progress than most on the twisties even in my P38 diesel. The limitation is not power but cornering ability.

Not at all. That is quite a presumption to make. I live in the countryside. There are a LOT of tractors kicking about this area (and caravans, and general Sunday drivers more interested in the views than the road). I don't particularly want to be sat at 35 mph for my entire journey because my vehicle is too underpowered to get past when it would otherwise be perfectly safe to do so. I'm not saying I have never exceeded the speed limit, but equally I rarely do exceed the limit.

Lots of tractors and narrow roads where I live, even a P38 diesel can out drag a tractor:rolleyes:

My diesel P38 will do that pretty easily if needed, although i find it preferable to to be late in this life than early in the next. Patience comes with age and understanding. :);)

I fail to see the point of the original post, is it just to prod us Diesel drivers with a ****ty stick.:)

Diesels are the devil's work - wouldn't have one if you gave it to me. And I wouldn't buy any product that has anything to do with BMW anyway - after what they did to Rover. Rover V8 all day long - 4.6 so you get a decent transmission into the bargain.

Note: Other opinions are available :D

At the end of the day, the diesel is a bloke's poshed up Land Rover.

V8s are footballers' wags' mobiles with the stains washed off the upholstery.

it all depends. Diesel will give plenty of torque, good for towing..

Torque per tonne is a good indicator rathter than BHP.

Personally, have the 4.6 thor, and, if i press sport mode and flick it onto petrol from LPg it goes like a scalded cat.

personally i like the V8, however, it really comes down to what you will be using it for. Like Datatek said, his diesel will pull astuck tractor, but if you want throttle response in a 4x4 that feels like you are driving an armchair V8..

Handling is a good point also, the EAS system is great for handling and stability, is easy to maintain, avoid coils and make sure you dont let any problems fester.

Speed and power is great. But to claim a 2.5 is too slow is just bonkers and shows a high level of ignorance. And frankly being a bit of a tit.
