I'd say that movement is a little excessive if you ask me....

me too, it quite an involved job to replace the rubber mount but not too expensive but the 2 rubber 'snubbers' that rave refer to either side are over £100 each which is amazing for a piece of rubber and i'm not sure if they will actually need replacing at the same time.
i'll try some vids of the prop shaft at the rear and rear suspension bushes

Hi HolidayChicken.

Did you get to the bottom of this problem? - I've been reading through your threads and our L322 Range Rover of 2003 vintage (a td6 model) is doing exacly the same. If I am real gentle with the throttle I can drive around it but if I give it beans I can hear a "Thump, Thump, Thump" from what appears to be the rear end.

Its recenly had a collection of new bushes and ball joints on anyway, but I'm keen to try and figure out what part is causing this clonking.

If you can let us know what solved the issue, that would be smashing.

Cheers

Neil.

hi Neil, i haven't as yet, did you have a look at the video i posted ?

i think the rear engine / gearbox mount is still my main suspect but i need to get the webcam out again and do some more investigating but its on a bit of a list of jobs.
if i drive mine really carefully on the throttle it doesn't do anything but its when you slow down to an almost stop and then accelerate you get the donk, clunk. thump, bump sounding noise like somebody has hit a large piece of rubber with a hammer. i do only get one thump though until i let off the throttle and do it again, does yours thump a few times?

i replaced my rear upper and lower wheel hub suspension bushes and also the rear track control arms late last year which didn't make any difference although they were shot.
i'll keep you posted mate

Hi HC

Sorry for the delay in getting back to this thread, and thanks for replying previously.

I too took a webcam underneath the car just this evening and I think I am pointing it in the right direction as yours and I cant see the movement you see in your video.

I then went ahead and put it in other places more towards the rear (which is where I am sure mine is coming from, but not 100%) and I cant see any movement there either. So, I am still a little bit stumped.

For clarification, mine goes thump thump 3 times I reckon, and it is quite difficult to hear. oddly, and again I am not 100% sure on this, I do wonder if the problem might be more obvious if I am pulling away with the wheels turned (ie out of a junction etc)

Anyway, investigation continues. I'll let you know I find anything.

As mine is under warranty with the garage, it is going in on the 2nd for this problem to be looked at, but I do like to know what is wrong with these things.

Neil.

Hi Neil,
i have not been underneath again yet, been busy on home diy projects:(
i only get one thump really, its after slowing down to turn or at a junction and its just as i start to accelerate, if i accelerate very gently i don't get anything and it also feels as if there is play in the drive train as you get a very slight delay in taking up drive. to get the movement in my vid i had to throttle on and off quite heavily.

Mine is definitely a muffled thump as if its rubber mounted also.

i dream of a warranty for mine, i am guessing if a bought an independent warranty it would either not cover me for anything or it would cost the same as a new range.

If yours is 3 thumps then i am guessing it may be diff, driveshaft, seized uj, rear suspension joints, i am just guessing out loud.

i sometimes get a click click click noise from the front when i am slow manoeuvring and then i don't hear it again for weeks.

Have you tried changing into off road to see if anything changes ?

Andy

Mine is definately a muffled thump - sounds rubber, like someone is hitting a rubber mallet on the tyres, but you can just about feel it through the car too.

I can also just about drive around it if I am very gentle on the throttle.

I did try low range earlier, and thinking about it, I dont recall hearing it....I'll try that again and let you know.

the warranty with mine is only the standard 3 months stuff - nowt flash.

a few pics below of just some of the rubber bits near the rear of the car, i have circled in red the gearbox mount that i think i need to change, either side of that are the rubber snubbers, mine are really lose when i move them by hand but not sure if thats normal, the other two rubbers i circled i didnt change but i changed a lot of the bushes on the centre pic and the radius arm shown as mine had seized meaning i couldnt adjust the rear toe

Bit of an update, whilst having a lounge around under the car I felt the need to grab hold of the front prop shaft , between the front diff and transfer box, and gave it a twist. I can probably turn it 20 degrees total backwards and forwards very easily and wondered if that is normal? I thought this might explain my clunk.
If anyone happens to be under their vehicle, I'd appreciate it if you could see if that's common, it's not play in the joints.
Many thanks

Lost me, or was this meant for someone else:D

Sorry! Should have quoted, Andy asked if someone could check their propshaft for similar movement....I am more than happy to check mine, but it wont be till this evening!!

cheers mate, no panic
i was just researching a bit about the cam cover gasket and seals as i changed my spark plugs yesterday and the 3 and 4 th plugs looking from the front of the car on the passenger side were submerged in engine oil down the plug bores.

This lead me onto looking at the PCV valve and i stumbled across your 'how to', that looked like fun:eek:
Jason changed out all the split breather pipes when the box was out but i didnt go as far as the PCV valve and separator, mainly so i could afford to eat that month..

Did you read Deasy's how to - http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f71/how-4-4-v8-pcv-valve-replacement-214983.html

or mine http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f10/replacing-pcv-valve-thats-when-went-bit-wrong-232995.html

??

Not a bad job, the biggest issue is the fact they used those stupid Torx bit bolts which just round off....a real fecker to do if they are stuck solid!

I replaced with Hex head bolts on refitment!

i will have a look at Deasy's but yes reading through yours it looked like you had a mare, i am guessing if i am going to do the cam cover gaskets then the PCV valve would be a must as well
you can see on the pics where the oil has been leaking from around the bolts

Fitting an OEM towbar and electrics in a bit - just seeing how far off topic i can actually go with this:)

I asked about a similar problem with my p38 diesel and ended up replacing the transfer box due to a worn Morse or Borg Warner chain. My indie garage just replaced the box with a reconditioned one rather than take the transfer box apart to replace the chain. Very similar symptoms, a clunking noise under the car when pulling away sharpish. All solved now ! See my thread on strange clunking sound.

thanks for the reply, that had crossed my mind, we had the transfer box out last year but that was at the same time as the transmission so not sure what would be involved in taking out the transfer box on its own.
i think i might add it to my list of jobs to do when i have too much money and time....
