Ok, I'll check that. Mine is a 1996 P reg so I guess it will be the EDC type. Someone else said earlier that, if it has wires connected to the no.4 injector, it is EDC type and I can confirm this also. So are we saying that the fuel injection pump is possibly knackered?

Not necessarily, the only thing that could stuff up the pump internally is if water was present in the fuel inside the pump when you parked it up however long ago.
The most likely answer is that the injection pump has lost its prime or has no fuel entering it i.e. no fuel in the pump gallery due to 1/ stuck/malfunctioning solenoid valve. Or 2/ an air leak in the pump body that has drained the pump galleries.
As your pump is the edc type I am not too sure how to go about getting into the solenoid shut off valve, its a simple task on the ordinary non electric pump. So I'd say don't stress, your FIP is probably ok, and as you mention other electrical gremlins, it could be as simple as a fuse or something simple, just a matter of working logically through it, but start at the fuel shut off solenoid.

As above, plus, if it is EDC, then diagnostics can tell you something about what is going on. I have heard that the FIP and the 'puter which controls it are tied together, and also that part of the immobilisation on EDC D1's is internal to the FIP - though that could all be rubbish... Have you seen the immobiliser light come on? does the central locking all work as intended from the fob?

The park lock out solenoid would seem to indicate that it is a japanese spec re-import ...?

What about the check engine light - it might be as simple as a blown fuse, or a lack or power due to verdigis whilst standing.....

Ecu is to the right and slightly tucked up above the throttle pedal, worth a quick check of the plug/pins etc

+1 - Which reminds me, this area can often have a few tin worm related issues, due LR p*ss poor prep / anti corrosion treatment <- though to call it anti corrosion treatment is stretching things a bit  - perhaps "LR's proprietary water trap creation process" would be more appropriate

IOW's, said ECU could be slightly damp ;)

I remember a guy who sunk an edc tdi and it stopped running, he couldnt get it going I told him where the ecu was and a short while later I saw him driving around the quarry again so can only assume he had got busy with the wd40.

I seem to remember having slightly the opposite problem with mine,I walked past it one day and heard the injector pump buzzing - even though the car was locked and alarmed... Turned out that water had got into the electrics in the drivers footwell and shorted out the engine ecu relay so it was on all the time.A bit of welding/sealing and a new relay and it was all good again.BTW the stop relay on EDC pumps is only a back up,the fuel quantity solenoid is capable of shutting the fuel right off.It was decided that a spring in the conventional stop sol was a good idea for a backup...

Sounds like you’ve lost your ‘lift’! Your fuel system depends on a vaccum and, having sat for 9 months, the tiniest air leak will have lost the vacuum. Your mechanical lift pump isn’t strong enough to prime the system from tank to fip. You need to undo the pipe that comes from tank to lift pump and rig up a hand priming bulb and bit of tubing. Priming it by hand will take less than a minute. Remove the fuel filter and filll that with diesel. Put it all back together and I reckon it’ll start and run, no problem.
