Cheers James. I only flushed it and replaced the coolant a few months ago. Sod's law it now needs a new rad isnt it.

Is there anything i should check/rule out just before i replace the rad? Ive checked the water pump pulley bearings and rotation.. That seems fine and good. Heater is red hot. Pipes dont seem overly pressurised compared to another 300tdi. Anything else?

to check rad you just feel it all over were theres coolant flowing it gets hot it should be hot all over but slightly cooler at bottom

I still cant work out why that sometimes it sits fine on the gauge though, and other times not. Even if the rad was poor

the stat will open at X temp. so when it gets to that temp, it opens to let the rad cool it. when too cool, it closes.. therefore keeping the X temp.

so it sounds like your rad is working just enough to cool it in these temps, but when you work it harder, off road/driving uphills it isn't coping.

did you flush the rad out when you flushed the engine?

Hahaha sorry for the bad quoting. Not my strong point on this ahha.

I did flush the rad out and all the pipes with a hose pipe when i replaced the coolant. Very thoroughly aswell really!

Just before the weekend, i took it 30 miles without an issue on the gauge, shortly after the stat was replaced.

Then today, urban driving approx 14 mile, it was getting warmer like shown in the picture

Don't be like that James. Mended now, a post you'd quoted had had a bracket deleted. That's all it takes and gets increasingly confusing as mis-quotes get quoted.

I haven't altered your posts, I put in a missing ']' and subsequent missing brackets.

I like you're posts, they help fix Land Rovers but a thread becomes difficult to follow (and help fix LR's at a later date) if it's difficult to work out who's said what

Morning all.

Unfortunatley i still have this issue. Its not my daily drive, so it doesnt do many miles other than long trips out.

Anyway, a week ago, i used it, did 30 mile the one day in it and the temperature gauge sat perfectly half way.

However, yesterday evening i did approx 15 miles, and on the return the temperature gauge was pushing on 3/4 which conserned me. This was after sitting it traffic for 20 minutes and then average speed of 40 mph after for 10 mins untill i got home. I must add that the viscous fan wasnt fitted, but nor was it on the week previous (removed to highlight problem)

As soon as i got home, i had the bonnet up, and with my cheap infa red temp gun (£15 amazon) i pointed it at the engine. Temp readings around the glow plugs were approx 85, same with the stat housing.
Top and bottom hose were about 65 degrees Celsius, and IIRC so was the header tank.

Ive got a trip in excess of 250 miles on sunday, and will be devasted if i have to cancel. Dreading it needing a rad, or worse.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi mate - My gauge sits pretty much where yours is showing in the picture.

On short journeys under 6-7 miles it sits around halfway, journeys anywhere from 6 to around 200-250 miles it reads 2/3. I use my Defender 300TDI as a daily driver, and my drive to work is 9 mile. To be fair I think this is ok, it's fairly understandable that you would expect a vehicle of this age to show some slight increase over longer distances as the radiator condition will have some deterioration, although I don't feel that it is any immediate need for concern. Ultimately, the only way to correct this issues is to purchase a new radiator, but make sure you don't get one of those new cheap plastic type ones.
 
Thanks landy fox. The thing that bothers me as it never did it before, otherwise i wouldnt mind so much.
Checked the stat housing earlier, and that was about half full, not over flowing!
 
You've obviously have an issue with your radiator due to age and it will need repairing/replacing. I wouldn't be overly concerned as from the description before, it's just showing signs of wear, in my humble opinion it's not about to go just yet, but would certainly look into replacing it in the future.
 
I was hoping the outcome wouldnt be a new rad.

To get me by the weekend, on A 250 mile round trip, do you think removing the stat, or fitting a 75 degree stat would help?

as long as stat opens fully i wouldnt change it ,you would be only trying to cover up another issue which isnt the best way forward 88 degrees should be ok
