it may be rad isnt effective as it was hence the check core gets hot all over or thermostat doesnt open fully etc and issue only show under the greatest stress conditions , its not unusual for problems to show when people take their caravan out ,or on longer than usual journey, but has been fine under normal driving

Cheers James.

Do you think testing that on a 6-7 mile journey that ive got to do later will be okay?

Shall i forget about the viscous fan for the time being? And if the rad feels okay, check the stat?

Hi James,

I did a 30 min journey this evening, urban driving. On the way temp gauge reached 2/3rds, on the return it was half way.

Anyway, checked the rad, the top hose is cooler than the bottom. Bottom hose is quite hot!

The fins all feel the same temp, but the rad is hottest nearest the bottom hose. Nearest the top hose is cooler.

Left side by the metal pipes is cool.

long enough to show bottom hose is hotter than top, which shows theres an issue ,cant say about rad till you find out why top hose isnt getting hot

The journey was 14 mile, 30mins

I'll pull the stat out tomorrow then and stick it in boiling water.

Will i need to bleed the system when it goes back in?

Thanks chaps.

thermostat cant be opening if top hose is cooler than bottom, have you tested thermostat

Just tested thermostat lads.

Boiled the kettle of water, put it in the water and it didnt open.

Then put it in a pan, and put it on the stove.

This image shows it unopened

Can just make out its starting to open here

Then it seems fully open at boiling point

If it didn't open with fresh boiled water I'd suspect it as temperamental
Continued mass heat on the pan might have forced it
I would change it personally

Boiling the kettle didnt open it.

So put it on the stove, and it didnt seem to open untill i couldnt bloody see the stat through the bubbling/boiling water. Im guessing this is why the gauge was reading 2/3rds to the red then? And not fully red?

Right guys, stuck a new waxstat thermostat in it. Took it for a run last week, and all was well.

Took the land rover out today, varied driving for approx 14 mile round trip. And it seemed to me like the temp gauge was getting hotter again. Once got home, checked rad was hot all over, and the right had side was hot. Rad fins cool, and oil cooler side was cooler too.
Top hose seemed about the same temp as the bottom hose, maybe very slightly hotter to the feel.

What do you reckon, or am i being paranoid. I took a picture of the gauge after the 12 mile journey. All looks fine under bonnet. This couldnt be due to me doing the valve clearances could it?

my 300 sits just over half... the gauges aren't very accurate, just show a trend.

if it just sits like that, i'd say all is well.

if you are now paranoid, buy a decent brand after market temp gauge and drop that in. you can also hook another up to the egr themo on the top of the head.

you'll know exactly what temp is what that way.

personally, i wouldn't worry until it started to move a lot more towards the red

oh and buy a laser temp gun for a tenner then you can shoot it every now and again to make yourself feel happy ;)

that doesnt sound like a good rad ,the rad empties and fills on the same side and can have a tendency for most of the coolant to drop straight down rhs and out without flowing through the whole of the core

Thanks fellas. Yep new after market gauges on the xmas list. They sound like a must have for a land rover.

The gauge is used to sitting at half way. So this isnt normal for the vehicle really.

So is the core suppose to feel as warm as the rad side itself. I didnt think water could pass through the fins?
