Refurbishing and testing sounds like a good option if the price is good too. It's a bit of a worry though given an injector going faulty looks like it caused this problem. Please tell me I'm being soft and the chances of it happening again are scarce. :)
Scarce I'd say.....but can happen as you can attest.

More common is running on its own oil from failed HG or Turbo bearings/seals.

Well, it'll have a new gasket and head bolts and a refurbished turbo.
Hopefully, I'll find a decent company to test and refurb the injectors :)

Phew! :D

I've accepted that the crank nut has defeated me this weekend.
The improvised pulley holding tool just wasn't up to the job.
It's a length of shelf holding angle with two holes drilled through to take M8 bolts (tried one bolt first - no way good enough). The shelf angle went down to the garage floor to brace the pulley. Seemed like a great idea at the time. I'd bought the right sized socket so thought I was laughing. Shocking the socket via the extension bar (not ratchet) did get me anywhere, so I tried the breaker bar. This just bent the bolts.
IMG_5950_zps7tsdfpa5.jpg

I'll buy a proper holding tool. Looking at this EBAY LINKY There's a more expensive one similar to the one Saint.V8 made, but that should work won't it? Anyone tried one of those?
I presume the bolt will be loctited in too?

Before packing up I thought I'd investigate the head where number 4 cylinder was running hot.
IMG_5952_zpsuonz69pw.jpg

There's a fair bit of piston alloy deposited on the surface of the valves.
Took the valves out.
Exhaust on the left inlet on the right.
IMG_5954_zpstekymmxj.jpg

A picture of the seats.
IMG_5953_zpsb4ebbg8r.jpg

I could feel a tiny bit of movement of the valves in the guides. I suppose this is to be expected at 180K
What would be my best way forward. New valve guides and get the seat machined? How much machining can be done on the seats? I know I could get some grinding paste and use the valve, but don't know if this will be enough?
id buy new valves and get seats cut,. cost of valve is the same as getting valve ground

the fault is most commonly a nozzle ,new ones gives you a good chance of long life

Not many diesel injector specialists, that I can, find up here. Most tend to mention heavier marine stuff on their websites.
Got a few numbers to call though. :)

I've just replaced the injectors in my 300Tdi with recon from LR Direct in Liverpool. list price was £35 each - they even come with new copper washers.. but they did me a deal for buying four....and they came next day...

There's a place near me that does injectors, but no service exchange or outright - so now I have some they can "play" with - I'll send em in, and then swap SWMBO's injectors too.

IIRC - the service interval for injectors is 100K, and mine had done 190K (!!) - so I figured it was about time.... hardly surprising but its now much quieter, and seems to use even less fuel than before - so deffo worth it.:)

That sounds interesting. :)
I've looked on LR DIrect (item number ERR3339) Just list new ones at £125.75 each for the Bosch ones. Do you have a part number for the refurbished ones. Are they OEM refurbished units?

Cheers, Blackburn. You've done a lot of digging around there. I didn't find the place in Blyth. It's not too far from me, so I'll give them a ring on Monday morning to see what they say and then decide to get mine refurbed or by some already done.

Thanks gents. Made my Sunday that! :D

I'm trying to work out all the bits I'm going to need to try and buy them in advance. Forward planning! The Mrs would be impressed ;)
I'm looking at the bottom and top gasket sets on Turners. Is it worth getting these sets or buying separate? Turners sell Elring, which I know are good. Paddocks sell Payen, which are still OEM, but cheaper. Are Payen good quality, should I buy separate. I think the top end set looks like it includes valve stem seals.

I have used both Elring and Payen both with good results....admitedly the Payen were on the V8's and Elring on the 200 and 300Tdi's we have owned.....so can't comment on Payen on Diesels or Elring on V8's....Just realised that is about as much help as a waterproof teabag in a chocolate pot....

Ha, ha. :)
Not really. If their kit is good for V8's they're going to be good for diesels. Do you buy those kits or separates?

Last timing belt kits I bought were from paddocks - Dayco belt and Sh*tpart tensioner and idler and timing case gasket. (£42) Done both ours - no problems.... yet ;)

http://www.paddockspares.com/timingkit300l-timing-belt-kit-300tdi-later-type.html

( not sure if this is the right kit for yours !! )

I've been looking at that kit. Didn't know if Dayco were a good make, which is why I'd left it off my list for now. I think mine will the the 'later' type, which I think is after the pulley modification.

i wouldnt do the valve guides or swap valve seats unless they are truly worn out, which i doubt yours are ,are turners refurbing your head

Do you mean on the engine build? Haven't spent that yet, but I'm not going to be able to avoid it. I could do it cheaper with Britpart stuff.

I haven't totalled the new chassis and body rebuild. Too scared
