Hi,

My 90 (fitted with Disco 200Tdi engine) has a cold starting problem.
If the temperature is close to, or below freezing it won't catch and keep going.
When I turn the key it fires, but as soon as the key is released (starter stops) the engine cuts out like it's starved of fuel. ( A combination of holding it on the starter longer and reving it as soon as it fires will get it going, with a bit of cussing)

It's been suggested that it could be due to modern deisel having more biofuel and stuff in it, which causes the fuel to thicken in colder weather, and therefore not draw through to start with.

I've swapped the lift pump and filters but still not solved the problem.

Any other suggestions?

My newly aquired 200Tdi is a little bit like this ... turn the key when cold and it would start but at very low revs and the battery light would stay on. I turned the adjuster on the accelarator cable yesterday and it seems to have cured it ... still very lethargic to drive until she warms up though ... unlike my old 200Tdi.

modern... 200TDI

mines a 300tdi, but know plenty with 200s that run on 100% bio alot of the time (as do I)
I thin mine down with 7% unleaded in colder weather and its fine.

make sure the throttle isnt over adjusted, the throttle needs to be fully closed for the cold start to operate on the fuel pump (and dont touch the throttle pedal)
id check yer fuel pipes tbd, make sure theres no air getting in there causing the bad starting.

I know I will get shot down by the 'I don't have them/ they don't need them brigade' but....

I similar problems on mine and it turned out all the glow plugs had failed. £12 later and its starts without problem in the coldest of weather.

I renewed the plugs on mine a few months back, I think maybe 1 if any of the old ones worked - still started every time but would really grumble when frosty. New plugs definitely made a difference, tis smoother and fires up quicker, used to 'surge' slightly when very cold as crank was turned by starter but don't notice that any more.

I assume the glowplug light still worked as normal even with the plugs knackered? Think I may change mine too if this is the case ... light on mine goes out as normal but cold starts are a struggle

Ha currently having this problem with mine! had a disco 300tdi with a similar problem in the summer, was the injector leak off pipes letting air in when the engine was off.
Worth checking them and it's a cheap fix, need to do them on the 200 when its not as cold

Thanks for the comments.:)

I'll recheck my throtle setting, but I'm sure it's closing down fully.
And I think I might just order a set of glowplugs and swap them over. I know I could try testing the ones in there, but in this weather..and working outside...

Oh, and I don't mind people stealing the thread when it leads to useful information. :D

that would sound like your getting air into system ,id check lift pump even though new right back to tank, poor starter or wiring can cause similar if turning just below optimum cranking speed ,so can low compression but would be noticeable with heavy breating with filler cap off and oil useage

I've cheched for air and there's no sign of leaks or fuel draining back (system stays full).
Starter is good and strong, and no worries about low battery as it's got two fitted.:D

As I said, it only does this in freezing weather and then only the first time you start up. Once the temperature is above freezing it starts like a dream.

All of mine were knackered and still the light glowed. I think the light is wired from the timer solenoid not from the actual 12V on the pugs.

Which is exactly what mine was doing before the glow plug swap.
