My torque wrench decided to not work about 4 bolts in the other day so I panicked about them not being correct. Read online that 40nm with 60 then 60 equals between 120-130 nm so i thought if I did all mine to 120 they would be the same.. All went OK except number 6 which I did too much and snap... Not sure what to do now.. lost interest in it a while back

for anyone reading this in the future. DO NOT DO THIS.

they do it in stages and angles for a reason. also in a certain sequence.

robbie, why do that? if it would have worked, you'd have literally saved 5 mins.

however, you've probably warped or started to warp your head and killed a bolt.

(plus some are another 20 degrees)

Well I've deffo killed a bolt that's for sure. Like I say I've lost interest think I'll just cover it with a tarp n leave the shocker to rust for a couple year until I can be arsed with it.

To think it wasn't the head in the first place.. Digging myself a bigger hole lol.

always sell it on as a project :D

Feel for you.

I have just completed a head refurb as Daisy (110 200tdi) is also breathing like a young train.

Hoping it was the HG it turns out bore three is pretty well goosed and allowing compression past and as a 200tdi does not allow access to the crankshaft/con rods to remove number three piston I have put it all back - new Elring HG, Headset, skim and valve lap with nothing to show for my endeavours beyond its all squeaky clean inside and out.

I now know when time and funds allow the engines got come out and be rebored etc.

PITA motoring if ever there was one, this on top of the clutch a month ago and the FIP only 5000 miles ago.

Couldn't. Would lose too much money on it that's the sad part. I've got three options. Run it with a snapped head bolt as I've nothing to lose..

Take the head off again and drill and tap the bolt I snapped (does anyone know the tap I would need?)
I do also have a spare gasket for it and it's not too hard to remove the head.

Or leave it at the back of the drive until I can be bothered with it.

OP you were not thinking straight when you ignored the head tightening procedure.

With heads it is critical and re writing the procedure is always a recipe for disaster.

I might well be tempted to drive her with the snapped head bolt - as you say you have little to lose and a head skim would be in order when you do get round to fixing properly.

I do find time cures the overwhelming desire to sell the 110 as one mechanical malady or another presents itself.

Just a thought, but can you get someone who knows what they are doing to give you a hand for a few hours?

If you ignore basic procedures and techniques when working on a vehicle you may end up with a huge bill! ;)

That's the biggest reason for giving up. It's hard pulling myself outside and spending hours on it alone. Just that bit of company for a few hours just to talk problems through helps so much..

I've decided I'm gonna strip it again, get the broken stud out and redo it with another new gasket. I'm this far in now I just need to keep going. Getting the head off isn't the worst part it's getting the broken bolt out so any ideas?

photos of whats left of the bolt.

where did it snap/

if you pulled the head off would there be anything looking back at you .

if so then the laser cam style stud extractor in the right size will remove it. i find them to work well forthe first 5 or 6 uses then the teeth get worn and it needs binning but as a get you out a tight spot they are good.

either that or an irwin bolt grip will grip a stud also.

get the head off and gies a photo of the stump before you go buying tools.

Bolts usually give at the start of the thread so if you pull the head with luck it'll be proud of the block.

Failing that as said drill and stud extractor, remember it's no longer torqued so will come easily enough.

Thanks alot guys. Im at work till 7pm each night until Saturday when I finish at 4 so I'll strip the head then if we arnt already back in hospital with the little one. Fingers crossed.

Ok so tonight after work i got an hour to spend on the truck, my 3 year old got rushed back into hop sunday morning on my only day off work, typical. so tonight i managed an hour..

I can't describe the feeling i felt when i saw the stud stood proud lol...

what i dont get is the fact that the bolts weren't actually that tight but this 1 has not only snapped but its bent.

Also the headgasket still looks brand new. Reuse or new?
Not worth the chance imo. New bolts, new gasket.

They were new bolts and I already have a new gasket.

Were new! but may have been overtightened, I would get a new set.

Quality new gasket, Payen or Elring are best! ;)

And follow the correct tightening procedure next time, get or make an angle gauge. If you do it right, it should last for years. :)
