Went to select reverse yesterday and nothing, you can feel it go into reverse and the motor will move an inch before it locks up, have just checked the oil in the autobox and that's fine..anyone any idea?

When checking the oil, did you undo the wrong bolt? If so it's a gearbox rebuild as you need to reattach the belts used for reverse.

Yeh, worth double & tripple checking you removed the right bolts - there's plenty of people who have changed thier tranmission fluid and removed the wrong bolt by mistake.

There's a thread by Hippo with pics of the gearbox and arrows pointing to the right and wrong bolts.

Did you check oil before or after the fault. If before then could be solenoid in gearbox knacked. If after then likely youve taken wrong bolt out to check it.

No the reverse drive went before I checked the oil I'm aware of the trouble caused if the wrong bolt is removed
But saying that I purchased the freelander of eBay and it was described with out any gear issues,
The bolt could have been removed prior to me buying it, as the first time I had to use reverse was the day after when I needed to reverse of the drive.

If the bolt was the problem would it still select reverse and move an inch or so before it locks up?
Also if I select neutral and try and roll it backwards it refuses to budge

if locator bolt has been removed and refitted, youd have no reverse at all, with out the reverse band clamping ,the epicyclic acts as a diff with a wheel spinning rather than a gear train

Ah, well we didn't know that, what with that being your first post. As a rule, garage diagnostics require, you know, a garage. A physical examination. Prodding.

We haven't had the chance to do that. You have. Guess that makes you the expert :p

All joking apart, I'll have a rummage and see what I can find on jatcos locking up in gear in the way you describe. No promises mind!

Same problem happened to our jatco auto box 1450 plus vat with 2 year warranty at Gravesend automatic gearbox repairers. Happened in May, perfect since.

the bolt removal issue is quite easily fixed once box is off the engine ,with only fresh sealant needed

vaguely recall an issue where the friction coating had slipped of the band and jammed

(not sure if I dreamt this though)
