Some NGK plus on order with 3mm internal lines for the leak off pipes. hopefully get them fitted Saturday morning.

looking into a electric fan upgrade too. Not that I’ve ever even had the slightest indication of the engine overheating. It usually runs on the cold side

You do not need to fit an "electric fan upgrade", if the car has aircon, the existing fans can be used for cooling with the aid of my mod.
If it runs on the cold side, sounds like the stat may be faulty or missing.

car does have air con. However the belt is missing from the crank pulley to aircon pump. So the state of the aircon system is yet unknown.

I may well just get a new stat as preventative maintenance when I do the water pump

As long as the fans work, they can be used for cooling, then the viscous fan and cowl can be dispensed with.
Make sure you test a new stat before fitting there are a lot of duff ones about, it should have a bleed hole in it which must be fitted uppermost.

Quite few on here do the fan mod with no issues. Usually used if Vfan dies as is expensive to replace. If it works I wouldn’t worry.
If you have the manifold off there are few sensors under there for cooling that you could change. They are only couple £ each
This isn’t needed if it runs fine

Stat is good shout.
Literally 3bolts and 1 o-ring
OE is £60 - they have a valve on them that sits at 12oclock when fitted. I bought £9 stat (at my own risk) and drilled small hole in it to act like the valve. This is not ample but for £50 I risked it and has been fine.

Thanks for the advice. Plan for this weekend is the plugs and lines. And then oil and filter / water pump and coolant in feb half term (teacher so I’ve a week off). Little bit of play in the water pump pulley that needs to be addressed.

Also want to get under and have a feel of the front prop shaft as I have a feeling there may be some play

Don't forget the axle stands before you get under otherwise it's 100 lines or detention.:D

If anyone wants to shed any light on this it’ll be much appreciated.

two videos. One inside the car one outside. Listen out for the rythmic noise. Also is it just me or does that fan look all over the place? You can definitely hear the noise every second or so in the 2nd vid. Engine warm in both videos

first vid - fan (noise not super clear)

2nd vid. Noise clear

Thanks for all your help yet again!

if Belt jumps about may be your tensioner.

I told you what will happen if that pump goes, how do you think I know all the part numbers :D
#bang

Belt doesn’t seem to jump around much. Seems the fan is very “out of balance” (if that’s a thing) - however you are right in saying that probably the play in the water pump.

Did you manage to hear the noise?

Don’t worry. Water pump on order, the metal one you said. It’s getting done next week.

If the original plastic impeller is broken make sure you get all the bits out. I glued all the pieces back together to make sure I had it all.
You can check your stat by hanging it on a wire and dipping it into a pan of boiling water. You will see it open/close. (Courtesy of TC59alan).

If your fan is anything like one of mine the plate at the back that bolts it to the viscous part was all cracked and let the fan blade move all over the place, made a bit of noise and vibrated quite a bit.
