Also, With the chassis, did you rub it down to bare metal before adding the rust treatment or did you paint over it as it was?

My dad did most of the transfer box work, but I now know how to do it. He just used a manual for overhauling the transfer box from online. He is experienced with cars so it wasn't too difficult for him. Beats the cost of an ashcroft recon :D

I wouldn't say I rubbed it all back to bare metal, but I used a wire brush in a drill to get rid of the flakey paint and most of the rust.

There is an App from the apple store on LR gearbox rebuilds.... it will show you the pictures frame by frame...go into you app menu and type in landrover/gearbox@apple.com it's something all 11-16 yr olds know, even allows you to order pizza on the app to your garage.

i need that app

And cheers for advice southern, My chassis seems to be painted red then black in places by the previous owner who just wanted to bodge it up like the internally rusted bulkhead!

Can they program it to order pasties instead ?:D

I didn't use a rebuild kit as such. I got a gasket set from paddocks, Bearings from paddocks, differential gears and cross pin from paddocks, a cross drilled input gear from ashcroft and two new drive flanges from paddocks

Wouldn't the red paint be red oxide primer? Mine was painted black in all the places that were accessible from underneath the car

What did that total cost come to in the end as I've got a pair of transfer boxes which I'm thinking of rebuilding

Possibly but u wouldn't trust the guy who sold me the 90....

I've since learnt that when someone says the chassis has never been welded it's all solid that really means u need a welder there's gonna be some nasties here!

Should I rub the chassis down and paint it with red oxide then?

If the mainshaft and intermediate gears need replacing then I wouldn't bother due to the cost. Luckily, mine didn't

Gasket set :£10
Flange : £7
Intermediate shaft : £23
Crossdrilled input gear :£54
Diff gear set: £50
Various bearings: £70
Circlips: £5

Total: £219

There may be some extra cheap bits that you might need but those are the main things that I replaced. As I said, if you need the main gears, for an extra £225, you may as well get ashcroft to rebuild it.
