It all went wrong when they introduced a plastic rad grill  Downhill ever since :p

Just took a read at this post, and laughed when I saw what I have quoted here as it was just what I was going to put, I love how the wire grille was kept from 48 to 71, but them know it all bastards had to TRY fixing what wasn't even broken. Idiots, saying that the stageone looked beautiful but they did it again they touched beauty and made it balls ugly!! However It's still a series split screen, 4speed, and by the way Sam,

Have you still got the hoop? And friendly advice don't change the county of it too much, them old girls are hard and pricey enough to find don't get too OTT.

Mind you as I said it ain't my truck, but it is my advice, keep up good work mate

No, that monstrosity went to the scrap yard long ago. Was a homemade one by bending some steel tube and welding a plate across the middle for spot lamps if you fancy making one. Never liked it, was too round for the truck, if it was squarer it might have looked half decent.

Turns out it isn't actually a county, just someone stuck stickers on it ( i don't think the county's came out till the 80s but could be wrong). I may yet put the stickers back on but Im still undecided at the minute

Well your semi right about countys, 2a did a prototype but failed until 79 or 80 just looked it up, how do you know it isn't genuine? I'd get Phil bashal at dunsfold to have a peek? Because it be too late if it gets repainted. Not only that but genuines are commanding stupid money now.

Let me know either way,

Well its a bit earlier than the other standard counties and it didnt have county trim (vinyl seats,, homemade door cards and a bit of dodgy carpetting held together with brown gaffer tape), it used to be a van but had the back chopped to put the windows in (can still see the marks from the grinder if you look closely. It was basicaly a farm hack for years until someone "restored" it ten years ago with a new chassis and thats the one I think put the stripes on. I'd be happy to be proved wrong of course but I dont believe it was a genuine county :)

I don't and never will understand why people spend on original details that are wrong for their truck, such a shame, I used to hate countys until last year I brought one out a hedge and got 2300 quid for her and now they've gone from rare to almost extinct.

Another point about it not being a county was the fact it only had one mirror on the wing when my granddad got it. Will email dunsfold and see what they say though :)

There are a few about though if you look in the for sale sections of the magazines

Right back to business,

First thing I did was to overhaul the bellhousing.

The input shaft was drifted out of the bellhousing (backwards) leaving this:

Using circlip pliers, the circlip was removed. This will be replaced. Note: there is a thrust washer under the circlip

Holding the input shaft (gently) in the vice, the bearing could be heated up with the blow torch until it fell down the shaft after a slight tap with the mallet

The new bearing was heated up with a blow torch until it could be dropped into place on the shaft and the thrust washer was replaced

Circlip being fitted using circlip pliers

The assembled input shaft. The seal land looks good so no worries there of any pitting ragging the new oil seal

The bellhousing casing was rested on top of the vice so there was enough room underneath for the input shaft to drop down. The casing was then heated up until the bearing could be dropped into place

The layshaft bearing could then be dropped into place using the same technique (heating the casing up) an the bearing carriers can be put in place (The input shaft bearing carriers are handed)

Layshaft bearing cover plate thing goes down with the lip going against the bearing

Nuts and lockwasher in place with the tabs being lifted up. You might find putting a prybar through the clutch fork hole and tapping that is easier for lifting the tabs

The bellhousing was then wrapped in rags to keep everything clean and put aside till later

Now then, rear mainshaft bearing housing overhaul.

I started by removing the old oil seal, removing the large circlip which retains the bearing and then drifting out the old bearing

The manual says to put loctite on the outer race before fitting to hold into the housing

New bearing being pressed into the housing

Once the bearing was pressed in and the circlip refitted, I fitted the oil seal (a corteco one)

Here you can see the layshaft outer race in position (more on this later), this was done at this point for convenience.

Again loctite was used but on the housing itself this time

Drifting the housing into place

The circlip which holds the housing in place can be refitted

when you press bearings in you should press on outer race if its in a housing ,inner race if over a shaft , though they arent tight in those housings and tap in with copper hammer, its better to fit housing on made up mainshaft then fit the assembly into box , it ensures baluk rings and synchro hub etc are seated correctly

do you know I ****ed myself laughing today when I took somebody out to my land rover, I gave him back his money as it turns out that my Carla was last on the road just a couple months ago with that FXXKED bulkhead!!!!!! obviously the man didn't care for his job! lol

Right, I'll get round to finishing off the gearbox bit eventually, takes more time than you think to write it up. But anyway, some pictures for those who get bored at looking at bits of gearbox, I took her out for a spin today to the breakwater and my brother took these photos

Spare wheels on now :) roof rack will go back on, took it off as an expiriment as it seems very sluggish since the old injector pump leaked and hasn't been the same since

Roof racks handy though for my fishing rods, its the reason I kept it :)

Makes no difference speed/ economy wise with it on or off either. Did the same run before and after and virtually no difference, about 3mph in it

Some more pics as promised of the gearbox build, will add text later when I get time
