WOW - why??
It was a strange occurrence.

Since I was a teenager I've always wanted one of these =>

In a way the Volvo is going to be the closest thing other than a Morris Minor I will be able to get in LHD form here in Holland. Damn shame the front nose of the Volvo is so blinking ugly.

I had no intention of buying a Volvo - however - I was shopping around for a MK1 Transit van!

Anyway - there's a chap who runs a business locally who deals in Italian cars - mainly old Lancias and Alfas. He's got a storage area next to my workshop area and was busy jiggling vehicle positions about trying to get to a Ferrari I think. I walked past the Volvo and jokingly asked if it was for sale.

(Mistake)

I had a feeling he'd want 10K for the thing so I thought I was safe. Turns out he wanted to get rid and made me a deal that I couldn't refuse.

If I'm lucky a bit of dull paint correction could easily double my money (there I've said it - it won't come true now! Damn you internet always tempting sod's law)

I'm in a similar situation. A mate of mine had a 1992 Mini Cooper which was in need of some loving. I jokingly asked if he would sell it (expecting a ridiculous price) and the next thing I know, it's all mine. Engine doesn't run but body wise it isn't actually all that bad. Hoping to get it back together whilst teaching my Son how to strip down and rebuild an engine and sell it on to provide funds for my D2

My father in law had a Jowett Javelin. He absolutely loved it. This is when they were just married so must have been the early sixties. He did a full engine rebuild. It's a flat four and he's always telling me about it. If I ever do win the lottery one of the first things I buy will be a Jowett Javelin for Derek.

I'm afraid I can't say I've done anything as noble as providing my son with an opportunity like that - my purchase is 100% cocking about.

Good luck with the rebuild

(From your build thread) Derek sounds like the ideal outlaw. I've never known one like it - mine were much more stereotypical!

Actually - come to think of it - that Mini Cooper has fuel injection doesn't it?

I was wondering if that system could be lifted and used on another petrol engine...

...I'm sure we've all heard about Megasquirt but the cost is way over the top - it is just a sodding box of electrickery and some software (not worth 600GBP in my opinion) - but fitting a non tunable system to a classic petrol engine might not be such a bad thing to do. Surely gonna be better than carbs and chokes.

Has anyone come across such shenanigans?

Anyone done it to a low compression series petrol engine before?

(Oh dear tangent city once more)

I thought megasquirt was supposed to be cheap?? I am sure you can get them for far less (especially if you build it yourself)?

It used to have but somebody has removed all the SPi stuff and fitted it with a Carb.
Oh well

I guess the carbs give more power

You would have thought so - but it seems as though the yuppies have moved in and the prices have gone up?

http://www.megasquirtuk.co.uk/ms2v3.html

I'm not sure how cheap it ever was.

I was just thinking that if you get a system that is meant to run say a 1.5L Honda Civic and "just" fit it to say a 2,25 Land Rover engine then you might get more reliable starting and perhaps better fuel economy. There's a chance it would be a pain in the arse but then at least you've fitted the fuel pumps, filters, figured out where the injector(s) are going, and the trigger wheels and the MAP sensor and ... and ...

...so you could then with great reluctance buy the Megasquirt ECU...

I've had a fair amount of experience with Bosch CIS (Mercedes) so much that I reckon hooking that up would be pretty straight forward - but CIS - really - why bother - it would have to be a total pig of an engine to start to want to struggle through the rest of your days with CIS...

I bought a second hand Emerald K3 for a fraction of that with discs etc. Might be a better way forward? The Canems also looks good for the enthusiast if the megasquirt is no longer the affordable option it once was...

Thanks but they're even more expensive. It really isn't worth the money at the moment - I'd rather save up for batteries and go electric!

My Mum's first car - her parents bought it as a graduation gift. I think it got px-ed for a Ford Consul after she met my Dad. I don't think she ever really forgave him.

I fancy an electric build sometime. Maybe a kit car build... but that’s another tangent ;)

Well I encourage both of you to consider a series Land Rover as the perfect electric vehicle of the future!

Nice box section chassis into which many a battery can be hidden - both in the box section and within (making sure of a nice even weight distribution) - two sturdy axles which could be flipped upwards by 90 degrees onto which electric motors could be mounted...

...and I know it irritates the heck out of some but "it is just like Mechano" you know - so "easy" to do...

Someone has done a Range Rover Classic... but yes, interesting idea :)
